Old Map of London West End, 1915 by Macdonald Gill - "Theatreland" Underground Tube Map
Express delivery available at checkout
In the the early 1900s the Underground was used almost exclusively by rush hour commuters and virtually unused during weekends, evenings and holidays. The Tube wasn't making enough money from ticket sales to pay for the repairs and maintenance of the system.
And so, the commercial manager of the network at the time, Frank Pick, had the genius idea that he had to show some of the other fun things you can do on the Underground... and thus he commissioned this rather amazing map of "Theatreland" - the London West End.
Around the edge of the map you can see London's dozens of theatres - and the nearest Tube station you should get off at. There's also plenty of fun anecdotes and notes on the map - for example, a zeppelin hovering over Lincoln Inn Fields and a bomb underneath with the note, 'a real bomb'.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 60 inches (150cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from London, who loves theatre, or perhaps someone who likes the pictorial art deco style.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (acrylic (perspex/acrylite)/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
