Old Map of Australia and Tasmania, 1851, by Tallis & Rapkin - Sydney, Melbourne, Perth

Handmade to order
Engraved by John Rapkin and published by J. Tallis & Co in 1851, this is one of the finest and most detailed historic maps of Australia, at a time when... well, look at the map - almost no land except the coasts have been colonised. Australia had only been founded about 60 years prior - and in case you were wondering, 1851 was the year that the gold rush officially began!
Dotted around the map are beautiful, detailed engravings of notable landmarks and vistas, such as a couple of kangaroos, some "natives of Australia", a scenic view of Sydney, and a really lovely collection of parrots.
Despite being so old, you'll still recognise many of the towns and cities on this map. Sydney is here, of course, along with some of its suburbs and nearby settlements. Tasmania has been settled - though here it's called Van Diemen's Land. Melbourne has been founded, as have Brisbane and Perth.
Most of the territories have already been carved out - Western Australia, South Australia, New South Wales, and Victoria. But notably there's no Queensland yet or Northern Territory. Queensland would be founded just 8 years after this map was published, in 1859. And no Canberra either, of course.
Take a closer look at the listing images and see if you can spot your hometown or favourite holiday location! Contact me if you want to find out if a certain place is on the map or not.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm), 18x24 inches (45x60cm) and 24x36 (60x90cm) but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) tall. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
This map would make a great birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Australia or perhaps someone who has holidayed or lived in Australia for a period of time.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame, or if you'd like to frame one of the larger maps. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
