Published in London by Whiteman, Hicks & Whiteman, this map appears to have been created to help convince British investors to invest in land grants - and then reap the profits from the raw materials that could be harvested there.
Santa Fe can be seen on this map, as can a number of proposed railroads. By 1873, many of the US's largest railroads wee being constructed, connecting the east with all the territories, cities and settlements sprawling out to the west.
The Rio Grande, of course, runs right down the middle of the map. The Rocky Mountains, and other mountains and rivers are also shown.
The map has been coloured in to show military reservations (pink), Indian land grants (blue) and privately owned land grands (yellow/brown).
All in all, a very attractive map of New Mexico - and it's quite unusual to find an old map of New Mexico without Arizona next door.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x30 inches (60x76cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 85 inches (210cm) tall. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
Please note that the unframed 24x30 inch map has white edges that can easily be snipped off (or they may help you with framing!) All other map sizes, and all framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from New Mexico, or perhaps someone interested in the history
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
