I have made thousands of custom maps, and most of them have been gifts for other people. Not a single one has ever been returned for a refund. In fact, usually I receive a lovely email about how the recipient loved their map, and spent hours poring over all the details! And then they usually buy another personalised map for another friend, another grandparent, their dad..
This will probably be the best gift you buy for someone this year.
My personalised maps are perfect as birthday, housewarming and anniversary gifts. (And of course, as they're printed on paper, you would get bonus points for giving one of these maps for a paper wedding anniversary!)
You need to pick a size, whether you want the map framed or unframed, and the orientation of the map (landscape, portrait or square).
No matter what size you order, the text and map will be sharp and readable. If you choose a smaller size, the map will be more 'zoomed in', and larger maps will cover a wider area.
Then, you must at least fill in the 'map address' box. I will make a map that is focused on this address. It can be a street name, postcode, town, etc.
You can then choose the age of your map, and the style. The detailed street maps, which show just about every house and road, are available from roughly 1870 to 1960 (but it does vary a bit by city and area).
I also have a more colourful, topographical map style. These are less detailed: they show some buildings, but no street names. You can see some examples of these colourful maps in the product gallery.
Now's your chance to make your map truly unique! In this box, tell me about any special customisations that you would like. Do you want your house highlighted? A short message added to the map? An illustration of your dog? Your family coat of arms? Learn more about map personalisation and see some examples.
Finally, there are a few more options to choose from. If you order a framed map, you can pick a different frame colour or material. If you prefer an older looking map, select 'aged' before adding it to your basket.
A variety of sizes are available, all the way from 8x10 inches (20x25cm) up to a map that is a few metres wide.
After you order you will get an email from The Unique Maps Co. with a draft of your personalised map. If you have not got an email within 2 or 3 days, check your spam/junk folder. And if nothing's there, please get in contact with me.
Your map will be based on an Ordnance Survey map from the beginning of the 19th century. The oldest map I will use to create your personalised map is from the 1850s. Usually I will use a map from 1890 to 1910, as those maps have a little colour in them and they're more interesting. I will try to find the oldest map that has your house on it.
If you would like a later map, I can create personalised maps up until the 1960s. This might be helpful if you live in a house that was built in the last 50 or 60 years. These newer maps have slightly less 'character' than the old ones. But if you live in a Victorian or earlier house, it will usually be visible on the early 1900s maps.
If you would like a highly customised map, or you want something a bit different from what you see in the product gallery, please get in touch before you order. I have been customising maps for decades and can do almost anything you can imagine to make your map truly unique.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for anyone who is looking for something more personal.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Many of our maps and art prints are chosen as thoughtful gifts for homes, offices, studies and meaningful places.
Choose a framed option for the easiest ready-to-hang gift, or choose an unframed print if the recipient may prefer to select their own frame.
We make orders locally in 23 countries around the world, so gifts can often be produced close to the recipient. This helps them arrive faster, travel more safely, and avoid customs or import duty surprises.
If you are not sure what to choose, please contact us. We can help you pick the right map, size, finish or delivery option.
Most orders are made locally and delivered in around 2–3 working days, depending on the product, size and destination.
We print and frame maps and artwork in 23 countries around the world, so your order is usually made close to you or your recipient. That means faster delivery, less time in transit, and no customs or import duty surprises.
Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.
If you need your order by a particular date, please contact us before ordering. We’ll check the best production route and delivery option for your location.
Express delivery is available at checkout for most countries. Next-day delivery is available in the UK, US, Singapore and the UAE.
Your order is covered by our 90-day returns policy and 10-year guarantee.
Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.
If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.
We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.
This map can be adapted for a particular wall, room or project, and our workshop can help coordinate the dimensions, material and framing before production.
Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.
For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.
Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
Personalising your map

I recently ordered from Unique Maps and I couldn’t be happier with the result. The map itself is fantastic — the level of detail is incredible and I find myself having a look at it almost every time that I pass it. I was in contact with Dominic by email during production and found that he was extremely polite and helpful throughout. I get the impression that a happy customer is very important to them and therefore they have an excellent customer service. Overall a great product with fantastic service.

I ordered a great looking map of Shetland (61x91.5cm) it looks good on my wall and shows a lot of detail. I am guessing that the original map was bigger which makes the written details rather small on my map. I would suggest mentioning the original map size with every map to prevent future disappointment. As a decorative piece my map is perfect! I would have liked it even better if written details were easier to make out. (of course I could have asked but I didn’t think of this when ordering) My map came from Germany, I live in the Netherlands so worked fine for me.

I purchased a couple of personalised maps for my mums 80th and step dads 70th birthdays. They were from where they both grew up as children in Middlesbrough and London respectively so managed to get the maps dated back to the 40’s and 50’s and even had their houses marked on the map. They were the perfect present and there was plenty of tears as they brought back many fond memories. They were the perfect present and would highly recommend to anyone looking for something special and a little different for a gift.

I am delighted with the map. I was looking for a large vintage map that covered both Manchester and Stockport, but couldn't find one. I emailed Unique Maps Co. with a map of manchester in the style I liked, and they quickly sent me a preview of an extended version that included stockport. The communication and personal service was fantastic. They were happy to adjust details, such as the colour of the title and the style of the key, and sent me a number of adjustments until I was completely happy. Store owner replied: Hi Robin. Thanks for your feedback. The problem with folding a map is that it creases - which doens't look very good when it's framed. I can send flat-packed maps if needed - but it is safer to send them rolled up (flat-packed maps tend to get bent by the postman!) Let me know if you want a flat map and I'll see if I can help you out.
Despite the fact that maps of Northern Ireland are not in their catalogue Sebastian and the team pulled out all the stops to produce exactly what we wanted - pleasant and helpful all the way! Sharon - Belfast

An excellent service all round. Fantastic communication and customer service. I ordered a bespoke map as an engagement gift for my son and his fiancé. The map was reproduced from an original with the beach where they got engaged shaded in blue and a title naming the beach added. A truly unique gift which was most appreciated.

I recently bought a customised map for a friend's birthday. I was delighted with the map which Dominic found, by the service, and by the final product. Not only did Dominic provide guidance on the highlight colour - he got the map delivered directly to my friend's address (not the delivery address I put on the original order), and made sure that there was no info on price included. My friend loves the map so much that I'll be doing this for another friend's "special" birthday which is coming up in a couple of months!

I bought a custom-made map as a present for my husband's birthday. Sebastian worked with us to ensure the map covered the areas that we wanted and advised on on sizing. It arrived framed and in pristine condition and my husband absolutely loves it; he's already spent hours poring over it and is now looking at buying more to add to his collection of framed maps of geographical areas he's lived in or has a special attachment to. Thanks Sebastian for our wonderful map!

If you're looking for an older looking map, select the "Aged" tone for your map. We will use a secret process, developed over two decades by our founder and chief designer, to make the map look older.
Generally we recommend our 'balanced' aged colour tone. 'Subtle' is a good option if you just want to add a bit of character around the edges of the map. 'Rich' will heavily age the edges and the centre of the map, darkening the overall appearance significantly.
Move the sliders to compare the Original and Aged tones. See lots more examples.
Here's an Original/Aged example of the Anglo Saxon Heptarchy.
And one more of the Roman Empire.
