This is the greatest old map of London ever created. Put together by surveyor and cartographer John Rocque and engraver John Pine in 1746, this map has an incredible level of detail. The cities of London and Westminster are already quite developed, but south of the river in Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham it's still mostly fields.

This map was originally published in 24 sheets. The map shown here is sheet 7, focusing on the space between Shoreditch High Street and Whitechapel Rd - the A10 and A11 in modern road terms - in the boroughs of Hackney and Tower Hamlets. Spitalfields is perhaps the most obvious landmark here, along with Brick Lane and Shoreditch, though you might be able to recognise some other landmarks if you know the area well.

Take a look at the listing images and you'll see that, even by the mid-18th century, many of London's street names and landmarks already exist - particularly in built-up areas like Westminster and the City of London. It's a different story south of the river, of course - parts of Southwark may be recognisable if you look closely, but Lambeth is just a handful of roads and fields that no longer exist.

This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 50 inches tall (125cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.

If you're looking for the whole map of London, which I can print and frame at sizes up to a few meters wide, see this listing: https://uniquemaps.co.uk/collections/large-old-maps/products/london-map-john-rocque-1746-complete-full

This large map is the ultimate statement piece for your study or drawing room. This map covers a huge swathe of central London, from Bethnal Green and Mile End in the east to Hyde Park and Chelsea in the west. From Hoxton and Marylebone in the North, to parts of Chelsea, Newington Butts and Deptford in the south.

If you're looking for other maps of London, including big ones that include the London suburbs, see my listings here:

You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

If you are not happy with your unique map for any reason, contact me for a no-quibble refund.

I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.

Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.

All of my maps are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all maps within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks or mugs) can take longer to make.

If you select the free worldwide shipping option, you can usually expect to receive your map around 10 days after you order. It may be faster or slower, depending on the impact of coronavirus in your country.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order will be sent by courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce) and will usually arrive in 2-3 days.

Customers in the US, Australia and Canada: Your map will be sent from a printer or framer in your country, which means you'll get your map sooner, you won't pay import duties, and we'll put less CO2 into the atmosphere. I have worked with some great printers and framers around the world for years - so don't worry, your map will still look amazing!
