Created almost 450 years ago, this is the first ever printed map of Cornwall published by Christopher Saxton, the father of British cartography. My prints of this map are based on one of the finest examples of one of the best and rarest maps of Cornwall.
There's an incredible level of detail on this map, with most towns, cities and even some villages in Cornwall clearly visible.
This old map was hand coloured almost 450 years ago and, as you can see, is still in amazing condition for a map of this age.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the same area by John Speed in 1611.
Many of the towns, villages and cities in Cornwall are already visible in this map. Curiously, a beautiful inset engraving in the top left of Launceston suggests that this town was the capital of Cornwall back then. Cornwall itself has a different shape, too - we now know that the southwest peninsula is a lot further south.
Some of the towns, villages and places clearly visible in this old map include: Penzance, Lizard Point, St Ives, Plymouth, Padstow, St Michael's Mount and even Lands End! But of course, many of them are spelt in their Early Modern English forms.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown!
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Cornwall or has Cornwall in their hearts.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
