This old black and white/monochrome wonderful map shows the ancient county of Cambridgeshire as it was in 1611. It was created by John Speed and engraved by Jodocus Hondius, and originally published in Speed's "The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine".

The natural size for this map is either 16x20 (40x50cm) or 18x24 inches (45x60cm) but it looks good at 12x16 inches (30x40cm) and looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 52x70 inches (130x180cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised maps or different framing options.

I also have a handcoloured version of this map, which is identical but was handcoloured 400 years ago and is rather beautiful:

Many of the towns, villages and cities in Cambridgeshire are already visible in this ancient map. But obviously, the university city of Cambridge takes centre stage, with a beautifully detailed engraving in the top left corner of the map.

The zoomed-in map of Cambridge shows some of the university colleges that already existed in 1611, such as Trinity College, Kings College, Corpus Christi, Magdalene, Queens, Clare Hall, Christ's College and Peterhouse (then called St Peters House). The coats of arms for 15 colleges adorn the left and right side of the map. Really, it's all rather beautiful.

Some of the towns, villages and places clearly visible in this old map of Cambridgeshire include: Peterborough, Ely, Wisbech, Huntingdon, March, St Ives, Whittlesey, Chatteris, Yaxley, Cheveley, St Neots, Papworth Everard, Duxford, Newmarket and Haverhill. But of course, many of them are spelt in their Early Modern English forms.

Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown!

This would make a wonderful gift for someone from Cambridge, who went to Cambridge university, or who has Cambridgeshire in their heart.

You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear perspex in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

All of my maps are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all maps within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks or mugs) can take longer to make.

If you select the free worldwide shipping option, you can usually expect to receive your map around 10 days after you order. It may be faster or slower, depending on the impact of coronavirus in your country.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order will be sent by courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce) and will usually arrive in 2-3 days.

Customers in the US, Australia and Canada: Your map will be sent from a printer or framer in your country, which means you'll get your map sooner, you won't pay import duties, and we'll put less CO2 into the atmosphere. I have worked with some great printers and framers around the world for years - so don't worry, your map will still look amazing!
