This strikingly beautiful and interesting birds eye map shows the "Boomtown" city of San Francisco in 1868 after it had undergone massive expansion after the Gold Rush earlier in the 1800s. The map was created and published by Snow & Roos. This map is exceedingly rare - there are possibly only 1 or 2 copies of the original map in existence.
The map looks at the city from a point roughly north east of the peninsula, looking south west.
Despite this map being more than 150 years old, you should be able to recognise many neighbourhoods and landmarks. Though, notably the city's famous cable cars wouldn't be installed until a few years later - so you won't see any on this map!
The Golden Gate bridge of course hasn't been built yet (it would be built in 1933), though you can see the 'golden gate' - the narrow strait between San Francisco and Marin County - in the top right corner of the map.
Golden Gate Park hadn't quite been built (it would be built a few years later), but you can see (a previous incarnation of) City Hall... and Mission Bay is still a bay!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 110 inches (280cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
I have a very similar map, but from 10 years later, showing a few more landmarks and neighbourhoods that have been built.
I also have a more modern birds eye map from 1982 showing you the city almost as it is today.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas or housewarming gift for someone from San Fran or who has the Bay Area in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
