There's an intense level of detail in this map. Please zoom into the images and lose yourself for a while - you might be surprised at what you can find!
The map looks at the city from a point just above Union Square and looks southwest towards where the Financial District is today. Back then, of course, it's all just harbours, quays and ships. You can clearly see the Battery and Battery Park though, which is a nice touch.
Union Square had only just been completed a few years prior, and at the time it was the scintillating star of the city. The fountain in the park celebrated the arrival of fresh water in the heart of Manhattan, delivered by the Croton Aqueduct. The rather wide avenues of Broadway and 4th lead away from Union Square to the south.
Even though this map is more than 150 years old, you should still be able to identity many landmarks, churches and other residences. There are some obvious omissions though - there are no bridges to Brooklyn, and of course no skyscrapers.
Governors Island can be seen in the distance - and Ellis and Liberty Islands. But there's no Statue of Liberty yet, sadly - that wouldn't come for a few more decades yet.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 140 inches (350cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
I also have a similar birds eye map of New York, but from 1982, if you want something a lot more modern with all of the skyscrapers on it.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas or housewarming gift for someone from New York or who has Manhattan in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
