This strikingly beautiful and interesting birds eye map is one of the first and most accurate maps of modern Chicago. It was designed by Charles Turzak and Henry T. Chapman and published in 1931.
The map looks at the city from a point above Lake Michigan, looking west across the city. In the foreground is Grant Park and Navy Pier, and then of course all of Downtown Chicago and its high-rise buildings including City Hall.
Most streets are labelled, but there are also lots of notes about interesting things that you might be able to find around the city. Little characters are dotted around the map, saying humorous things.
The map spans a huge area - all of metropolitan Chicago at the time. In modern day terms, it spans from around Evanston and Kenilworth in the north, and Lake Calumet in the south. The map appears to have 'condensed' areas north and south of central downtown Chicago.
There's an intense level of detail in this map. Please zoom into the images and lose yourself for a while - you might be surprised at what you can find!

This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (30x45cm), 18x24 inches (45x60cm) and beyond to 24x36 inches (60x90cm) - but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 150 inches (380cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
I also have some similar birds eye maps of other US cities, like New York, San Francisco and Seattle.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas or housewarming gift for someone from Chicago or who has the Midwest in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
