Its slender, twisting branches spread across the blue sky like dark tracery, while the trunk’s warm brown tones anchor the composition amid the luminous whites and cool shadows of the ground. Slightly displaced from the centre, the tree establishes a subtle asymmetry: the eye follows its branching silhouette before moving out across the open field and towards the low horizon.
Macke was one of the leading figures of German Expressionism and became closely associated with Der Blaue Reiter, the avant-garde group formed in Munich the following year. This painting therefore belongs to a formative moment, when artists across Germany and Europe were reconsidering the relationship between observed reality, colour and pictorial design. Macke absorbed these developments without abandoning clarity. Here, the winter landscape remains immediately legible, but natural forms are simplified into a poised arrangement of colour, contour and surface.
A closer look
The tree provides the painting’s strongest vertical movement. Its trunk rises firmly from the lower section before dividing into increasingly delicate limbs, some extending almost horizontally, others turning upwards into the sky. Against the pale atmosphere, the finest twigs form an intricate, lace-like network. Flecks of darker pigment around the base prevent the trunk from appearing detached from the ground, giving it weight within the otherwise open composition.
Snow occupies much of the lower half, yet it is far from an undifferentiated field of white. Varied strokes suggest shallow drifts, depressions and the uneven contours of the land beneath. Near the horizon, slight modulations of tone distinguish foreground from distance, allowing the landscape to recede without relying on sharply described detail. These small changes give the scene spatial depth while preserving the broad simplicity of its design.
Above, the sky shifts from paler blue close to the horizon towards deeper tones higher in the composition. Visible brushwork breaks up the colour, producing a gently animated atmosphere rather than a smooth backdrop. The cool blue and white palette is punctuated by the earthy trunk, a restrained contrast that makes the tree seem both part of the landscape and emphatically set against it. Macke’s handling turns the familiar elements of a winter scene into interlocking areas of light and colour.

Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
