This exceedingly rare world map - one of the first ever published in 1565 - has been lovingly restored by The Unique Maps Co.

The map was crafted and published by Ferando Bertelli out of Venice. It is likely based on the work of Paolo Forlani, and his map was based on Giacomo Gastaldi's world map - a map that would be the prototype for many other world maps over the next 100 years or so.

Back in the 1500s our understanding of the world was rather different than it is today. Some coastlines are accurate... but you can see that the west coast of the US was still connected to Asia - and, well, check out the MASSIVE southern continent of Terra Australis (which if you look closely has a unicorn!)

All over the map are 'terra incognita' - a cartography term (literally 'land unknown') that means the area has not yet been mapped.

This is a fascinating world map - one of the best I've ever seen. There are sea monsters, boats, and two delightful cherubs creating the wind system.

This map is an unusual size - it's extremely wide - and would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase. The two smaller sizes (18x11 and 24x14 inches), if you order them unframed, come with white edges that can be easily snipped off. The larger sizes, and all the framed maps, are all printed and pre-cut perfectly to size.

It looks magnificent at every size and you'll always be able to read the writing on the map. I can print very large versions of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) wide. Get in touch if you're looking for very large maps.

If you're looking for a framed map that isn't in stock, please get in touch and we can discuss your needs. I use super-clear museum-grade acrylic (acrylic (perspex/acrylite)/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

This world map would make a perfect gift for someone who loves to travel, who loves the history of cartography, or it would look great as wall art on your own walls! It's a beautiful piece of wall art that would make a good housewarming gift.

If you are not happy with your unique map for any reason, contact me for a no-quibble refund.

I am very confident you will like your old map. I have been doing this since 1984 and I'm a 5-star Etsy seller with 1000s of sales and reviews.

This is the cheapest place to buy my maps online.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.

Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.

All of my maps are well packaged and sent in a rugged tube if unframed, or surrounded by foam if framed.

I try to send out all maps within 1 or 2 days of receiving your order, though some products (like face masks or mugs) can take longer to make.

If you select the free worldwide shipping option, you can usually expect to receive your map around 10 days after you order. It may be faster or slower, depending on the impact of coronavirus in your country.

If you select Express Delivery at checkout your order will be sent by courier (Fedex, DHL, UPS, Parcelforce) and will usually arrive in 2-3 days.

Customers in the US, Australia and Canada: Your map will be sent from a printer or framer in your country, which means you'll get your map sooner, you won't pay import duties, and we'll put less CO2 into the atmosphere. I have worked with some great printers and framers around the world for years - so don't worry, your map will still look amazing!

My maps are extremely high quality reproductions of original maps.

I source original, extremely rare maps from libraries, auction houses and private collections around the world, restore them at my London workshop, and then use specialist giclée inks and printers to create beautiful maps that look even better than the original.

My maps are printed on acid-free archival matte (not glossy) paper that feels very high quality and almost like card. In technical terms the paper weight/thickness is 10mil/190gsm. It's perfect for framing.

I print with Epson ultrachrome giclée UV fade resistant pigment inks - some of the best inks you can find.

Please contact me if you're looking for a print on canvas or cotton rag.
