Vietnam Demarcation Line and Demilitarized Zone is a stark, authoritative portrait of the narrow borderland that divided North and South Vietnam in the tense aftermath of the Geneva Accords. Compiled in 1957 by the United States Central Intelligence Agency, it fixes the viewer’s eye on the Sông Bến Hải, the river whose course doubles as a geopolitical fault line. A bold red demarcation line cuts across a pale field, its clarity by design: this was a frontier to be read instantly. Around it, the demilitarized zone is carefully delineated, with towns, roads, and railways aligned like pieces on a strategic board. The result is a documentary snapshot of an uneasy standstill that would soon reshape world affairs.

Created just three years after the ceasefire that ended the First Indochina War, the map distills a volatile compromise into cartographic order. The CIA, long practiced in transforming intelligence into lucid geography, based this edition on the U.S. Army Map Service Indochina series L605 at the operationally precise scale of 1:100,000. Production identifiers—25863 3-57 and SSO-655-5/57—anchor it within a discreet chain of Cold War mapmaking. The demarcation line and the surrounding demilitarized strip are rendered with forensic restraint, conveying both the provisional character of the border and the very real limits it imposed on movement, administration, and the projection of power.

The landscape itself—northern Quảng Trị Province—emerges in fine, pragmatic detail. The Sông Bến Hải flows west-to-east, threading from the inland foothills toward the coast, its bends and crossings annotated where authority permitted passage. Spot heights punctuate the terrain, turning hills and ridgelines into legible problems of visibility, transport, and defense. Đông Hà and Quảng Trị appear as regional anchors; Lao Bảo marks the inland approach toward the Laotian frontier; Cam Lộ and Triệu Phong dot the corridors between river, plain, and upland. A web of roads and a parallel rail alignment draw a quiet geometry across the map, revealing how topography authored logistics in a zone where every route mattered.

At the shoreline, the river’s estuary meets open water, a reminder that this frontier touched both the maritime and the mountainous. The cartography invites strategic reading without rhetoric: rivers as seams and barriers, ridges as observation posts, valleys as funnels for supply, and crossroads as political levers. By emphasizing political boundaries alongside the civilian infrastructure that sustained daily life, the map captures the paradox of a place at once ordinary and electrified by tension. Authorized crossing points—few, fixed, and conspicuous—speak to a regime of regulated contact, where each bridge and checkpoint bore the weight of international agreements and local realities.

As a work of Cold War cartography, the piece exemplifies the CIA’s penchant for clarity under pressure: a restrained palette, a decisive red line, and typography that privileges function over flourish. Its composure belies the fragility of the moment it records—1957, before the border hardened into a battlefield yet after the region had learned the costs of conflict. The administrative fingerprints in its production codes quietly tie it to a wider archive of intelligence mapping. Today it endures as a precise, unsentimental witness: a map that translates a contested frontier into legible form, and in doing so, preserves the geopolitical hinge on which a generation’s history turned.

This map looks great at every size, but I always recommend going for a larger size if you have space. That way you can easily make out all of the details.

This map looks amazing at sizes all the way up to 90in (230cm). If you are looking for a larger map, please get in touch.

This map is wider than most maps, which would make it a perfect statement piece above a mantelpiece, sofa or desk.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving, anniversary or housewarming gift for someone from the areas covered by this map.

This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Discuss this piece with our Trade & Projects team

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
