Published in 1950 by the United States Geological Survey, “Springfield West” presents the Illinois capital and its western surroundings at the highly legible 1:24,000 scale, capturing a city in the midst of post-war transformation. The map’s title is spare and precise, in the USGS tradition, yet the landscape it records is richly layered: Springfield’s rectilinear street grid, rail corridors, suburban edges, rural roads, and surrounding farmland all appear in meticulous relation to one another. This was an era when American cities were expanding outward, infrastructure was being improved, and automobile travel was reshaping daily life. In that context, the map becomes more than a navigational document; it is a portrait of Springfield at a particular historical threshold.

The United States Geological Survey brought to this map the institutional discipline that made its quadrangles indispensable to engineers, planners, geologists, and travelers alike. Founded in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became synonymous with careful field observation, standardized symbols, and scientifically grounded representation of terrain. On “Springfield West,” that precision is visible in the clean grid, measured road hierarchy, railroad alignments, and contouring that quietly explains the shape of the land beneath the city. The map does not dramatize the landscape; instead, it reveals it through accumulated detail. Elevation, drainage, settlement, and transportation are integrated into a single coherent image, making the region intelligible at both civic and geographic scales.

Springfield itself gives the map unusual historical resonance. As the capital of Illinois and the city most closely associated with Abraham Lincoln’s mature life, law practice, political rise, and enduring memory, Springfield occupies a distinctive place in the American imagination. By 1950, it was not only a seat of government and a site of pilgrimage, but also a working Midwestern city with neighborhoods, commercial corridors, rail lines, and expanding residential districts. The map’s depiction of streets and urban sections evokes a capital organized by civic order yet shaped by everyday movement. Its surrounding rural margins remind the viewer that Springfield’s identity remained closely tied to the agricultural landscape of central Illinois.

The cartographic language of the map is especially rewarding. Contour lines trace the subtle rises and falls of the Springfield area, showing a terrain that is generally gentle but far from featureless. These lines lend depth to the urban grid and make visible the relationship between built form and landform. Roadways of varying importance are differentiated with clarity, while railroad lines emphasize the industrial and logistical networks that helped sustain the city. Lakes, streams, and waterways interrupt the regularity of streets and fields, adding natural structure to the composition. The result is a beautifully disciplined topographical record, at once practical, restrained, and historically evocative.

Beyond the city, “Springfield West” records Southern View, minor road networks, scattered parklands, open fields, and the patterned geometry of rural land division. These features speak to a mid-century landscape still balanced between town and country, before later decades of suburban growth altered the region’s edges. For collectors, the map offers a compelling comparison point: contemporary maps reveal expansion, changed land use, new infrastructure, and altered neighborhoods, while this 1950 sheet preserves an earlier arrangement of movement and settlement. It captures Springfield not as a static monument to Lincoln or state government, but as a living place—measured, mapped, and poised between its nineteenth-century inheritance and its post-war future.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
