Published in 1950 from survey data collected that same year, the United States Geological Survey’s “Monteagle” captures a compelling mid-century portrait of one of Tennessee’s most evocative upland communities. Set within the Cumberland Plateau, the map centers on Monteagle, a town long associated with mountain air, scenic overlooks, and travel routes between the Tennessee Valley and the Highland Rim. At a scale of 1:24,000, the map offers an intimate, field-ready view of the landscape, translating hills, hollows, roads, streams, and settlements into the precise visual language of American topographic mapping. It is both a practical document and a historical snapshot, preserving the geography of Monteagle before later decades of highway expansion and regional development reshaped access to the plateau.

The USGS, responsible for this map, brought to American cartography a distinctive blend of scientific rigor and understated elegance. Its topographic sheets became indispensable tools for engineers, planners, geologists, foresters, hikers, and local governments, establishing a shared geographic vocabulary for the nation’s terrain. In “Monteagle,” that institutional clarity is evident in the disciplined contouring, carefully classified roads, hydrological detail, and standardized symbols. The map is not ornamental in the old decorative sense, yet it has a refined beauty of its own: a landscape rendered through measurement, observation, and restraint. Its green and brown tones distinguish wooded areas and relief, while the contour lines give the surface an almost sculptural presence.

Monteagle’s setting gives this sheet particular character. The Cumberland Plateau is not a gentle backdrop but an active force in the map’s design, with tightly nested contour lines marking steep slopes, ridges, ravines, and valley walls. These elevation changes explain much about the region’s settlement patterns: roads bend with the land, streams trace low corridors, and habitations gather where the terrain permits. The map reveals a landscape of upland complexity, where short distances may involve notable changes in elevation. For anyone interested in Tennessee geography, it offers a fine example of how topographic mapping makes visible the structure beneath the scenery, showing why Monteagle has long been regarded as a gateway to a rugged and picturesque mountain region.

The road network shown around Monteagle is especially revealing as a record of movement before the modern interstate era fully transformed the area. Minor roads and trails thread through the hills, following ridgelines, stream valleys, and practical gradients rather than geometric regularity. The later importance of the I-24 corridor underscores Monteagle’s enduring strategic position as a passage through challenging plateau terrain, though this 1950 view evokes an earlier transportation landscape of local roads, rural connections, and mountain approaches. Such details lend the map historical richness: it shows not merely where people lived, but how they moved through a demanding environment. The relationship between topography and infrastructure is one of the sheet’s most absorbing qualities.

As a mid-twentieth-century document, “Monteagle” invites comparison with the present. It preserves the distribution of settlement, roads, streams, wooded areas, and open land at a moment when many American rural landscapes were beginning to change more rapidly. The map’s value lies partly in its restraint: by recording only what could be surveyed and symbolized, it allows the viewer to read development, land use, and natural form without distraction. Monteagle appears here as both town and terrain, a named place embedded in a larger physical system of hills and watersheds. For collectors, historians, and admirers of Tennessee’s plateau country, this map offers a beautifully precise window into a landscape poised between older rural patterns and modern transformation.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

We work with interior designers, hospitality businesses, property professionals, offices and corporate buyers on individual pieces and larger coordinated projects.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
