Titled “Hiawassee” and dated 1941, this US Geological Survey topographic map captures a mountain landscape in northern Georgia at a particularly evocative moment in its modern history. Centered on Hiawassee and Young Harris, the map presents the ridges, valleys, streams, roads, and settlements of the southern Appalachian highlands with the precision for which USGS quadrangles became famous. Its 1:24,000 scale allows the viewer to move between broad geographic understanding and intimate local detail, tracing the relationship between human settlement and rugged terrain. The map’s shaded relief and close contouring give the region a sculptural quality, making the folds of the land immediately legible. It is both a technical survey and a portrait of a distinctive Appalachian place.

The US Geological Survey, established in 1879, was central to America’s effort to measure, classify, and understand its vast natural landscape. By the early twentieth century, its topographic maps had become indispensable tools for engineers, foresters, planners, educators, and travelers. This 1941 Hiawassee sheet belongs to an era when federal mapping was closely tied to conservation, infrastructure, flood control, and the growing recreational appreciation of mountain regions. The USGS style is disciplined but elegant: muted colors separate woodland, water, roads, and relief, while contour lines record the rise and fall of the terrain with mathematical clarity. The result is a map that feels both authoritative and deeply atmospheric, revealing how scientific cartography can also possess quiet visual beauty.

Hiawassee appears here as a small mountain town shaped by watercourses, roads, and enclosing heights. The Hiawassee River and its tributary streams thread through the landscape, their courses carving valleys between steep Appalachian ridges. Nearby Lake Chatuge, now one of the area’s defining recreational features, gives the map additional historical resonance, marking a landscape connected to mid-century changes in water management, settlement patterns, and tourism. Roads and trails wind through the valleys rather than overpowering them, emphasizing the dominance of topography over human design. The map invites close study: each creek, hollow, ridge spur, and crossing helps explain how communities developed in this terrain, where movement has always been negotiated with the mountains.

Young Harris, shown near Hiawassee, adds another layer of cultural interest to the map. Known for Young Harris College, the town represents the educational and religious traditions that took root in the southern Appalachian uplands during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In the context of this map, Young Harris is not an isolated point but part of a larger network of valleys, farms, roads, forested slopes, and mountain passes. The surrounding Chattahoochee National Forest underscores the region’s importance in American conservation history, preserving wooded highlands, watersheds, and wildlife habitat. The map’s contours make the setting of the college and town especially vivid, showing how civic life was nestled within a dramatic natural amphitheater.

Among the most compelling features of the region is Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia, lying within the wider mountain landscape represented on and around this quadrangle. The map’s dense contouring and shaded relief evoke the sharp elevation changes characteristic of the Blue Ridge, where peaks, coves, and stream valleys create a richly varied terrain. This is a landscape of forested summits, narrow routes, cold creeks, and long views—an Appalachian world that has since become closely associated with hiking, scenic drives, protected lands, and lakeside recreation. As a 1941 document, the map preserves the area before decades of intensified tourism, road improvement, and environmental management, offering a finely detailed record of place at a pivotal moment.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
