Handmade to order
As you can see, when Chicago was officially founded in 1833 it was just a small settlement of about four square blocks, nestled up against Chicago River before it empties into Lake Michigan.
If you zoom in, you can even see the town's population: just 350!
The map is oriented with the west to the top of the map - so you may have to mentally turn the map anticlockwise to better visualise the modern-day Chicago which lines the whole southwest corner of Lake Michigan.
When you zoom in and look at the listing images, you might be surprised to see that most of the streets haven't changed in over 170 years. Lake St, Randolph St, and Washington St are still in exactly the same place. As are Clark, Lasalle and Dearborn.
You might not recognise many other landmarks though - really, Chicago in 1833 was just a cluster of houses, a couple of churches, and a school.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x18 inches (30x45cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 115 inches (300cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Chicago, who lives there, or perhaps someone who has travelled or worked there extensively.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
