If you've ever wondered why that venue on the South Bank of the Thames is called The Royal Festival Hall... it's because it was built for the Festival of Britain!
The Festival of Britain was designed to raise the popularity of the Labour party at the time - and also to remind millions of Brits that, you know, post-war life isn't THAT bad. The Festival celebrated the best of British and was meant to show the populace at large that the post-war recovery was going well.
1951 also fell on the centennial of the 1851 Great Exhibition - the first of the World's Fairs that would see a giant Crystal Palace built in... Crystal Palace.
The map shows you all of the interesting things that were going on in London as part of the Festival, along with which Underground lines to take to get there. There's also a bunch of portraits and vignettes showing various famous people and landmarks.

This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 60 inches (150cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from London, who loves the arts, or just someone who likes the pictorial style of this map.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
