Old Map of Bermuda, 1640 by Willem Blaeu - Somers Isles Tribes & Parishes

Handmade to order
Back in 1640 the island was controlled by the Somers Island Company (sometimes known as the Bermuda Company), and had only really been occupied for about 25 years.
The 'lines' that you see on the map were 'parishes' planned by Richard Norwood, who performed the first survey of Bermuda. The land was split into strips and then sold to shareholders - and then the shareholders were divided into 'tribes'. All of the shareholders of Bermuda are listed across the bottom of the map, and the coloured lines on the map delineate each of the tribes: Sandy's, Somers, Southampton, Warwick, Pagets, Pembroke, Devonshire, Smiths, Hamilton - and the smaller islands of St George's and St David's.
Notably, there do not appear to be any towns or cities yet on Bermuda - just clusters of houses/hamlets that are not named on this map.
This map also has elements of a naval chart, with little crosses marking reefs and other obstacles.
And if all that wasn't enough, this is actually a double map! At the top, you can see the edges of Florida and England - and if you really squint, you can see a tiny speck that shows Bermuda's relative position in the middle of the Atlantic.
All in all, a truly wonderful map of Bermuda.

This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm), 18x24 inches (45x60cm) and 24x36 (60x90cm) but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 100 inches (250cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
This map would make a great birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Bermuda or perhaps someone who has holidayed or lived in Bermuda for a period of time.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes your map pop out when on the wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame, or if you'd like to frame one of the larger maps. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
