This is a very fine example of the very first atlas map of Africa by Dutch cartographer Abraham Ortelius in 1570. This map was originally handcoloured almost exactly 450 years ago and has been lovingly restored by The Unique Maps Co.
This is the best and most iconic map of the African continent from the 16th century. A must-have addition to any collector of world maps.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90 inches (230cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
This map was created back when cartographers knew relatively little about Africa, and this map is full of inaccuracies. Ortelius consulted many other maps of Africa to create this one - and those source maps themselves were inaccurate.
Ortelius's attempt at rendering Africa's rivers, running through the centre of the continent, was valiant - but quite false. In medieval times it was believed that large rivers all gushed forth from a lake in the middle of the continent.
This map of Africa would make a perfect gift for someone who loves to travel or explore, or who has spent time in Africa. Or it would look great as wall art on your own walls! It's a beautiful piece of wall art that would make a good housewarming gift.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
