Seldovia C-5 NE is the original title of this finely detailed USGS topographical sheet, published in 1987 with an imprint of the same year. Centered on Homer and the surrounding reaches of Alaska’s Kenai Peninsula, the map distills the rugged meeting of mountain, tundra, and sea at a crisp 1:25,000 scale. Its “Provisional” designation, printed prominently, signals a work issued to meet pressing informational needs while some datasets awaited fuller verification—an honest cartographic snapshot taken mid-revision. Readers will find the classic USGS symbology at its most legible: calibrated contour lines wrapping the coastal bluffs and uplands, color treatments separating elevations with quiet precision, and a confident delineation of shorelines and wetlands where Kachemak Bay’s tides sculpt the landscape.

The United States Geological Survey stands behind this sheet, bringing to it the agency’s century-deep authority in mapping America’s terrains and waters. By the late 1980s, USGS cartographers were synthesizing photogrammetric analysis, field checks, and modern printing to deliver maps that could guide scientists, engineers, and outdoorspeople with equal reliability. Here that expertise shows in the choreography of line and hue: contour intervals that articulate relief with scientific clarity; hydrographic and land-use layers that interlock without clutter; and road, grid, and boundary information tuned to real-world navigation. The “provisional” note does not diminish the map’s value; rather, it documents an intentional, iterative approach to accuracy in a vast and rapidly studied Alaskan domain.

Geography dominates with the sweep of Kachemak Bay, its indented shoreline scalloped by coves, tidal mudflats, and saltmarsh sloughs. The Homer Spit thrusts into the bay like a cartographic exclamation of glacial legacy and longshore drift, while inland the bluffs step upward in terraces that the contours render with sculptural finesse. Numerous creeks braid off the uplands to meet the tidelands, and low wetlands and ponds stud the forelands behind the beach ridges. Subtle color gradients shade the foothills that lean toward the Kenai Mountains, revealing the pull of past ice across moraine-studded ground. Together, water and relief read as a living system—an estuarine threshold that channels weather, wildlife, and human movement along its narrow corridors and high, view-rich ridgelines.

Human imprints are drawn with equal care. Homer’s townsite resolves into a crisp framework of streets and services, its coastal infrastructure arrayed along the Spit and shoreline. The Sterling Highway’s approach anchors the terrestrial connection to the rest of the peninsula, while secondary roads and spurs trace homesteads, farms, and wooded parcels climbing the hillside. Trails and unimproved tracks stitch the backcountry to the bay, marking routes used for forestry, recreation, and access to remote homesites. Utilities, landmarks, and selected facilities appear in the clean USGS vernacular, situating everyday life within a landscape that still dictates terms—steep grades, marshy bottoms, seasonal watercourses—all made legible through the interlock of linework, labels, and tone.

As a product of a high-water mark in USGS cartography, Seldovia C-5 NE speaks to a period when detailed mapping underpinned land-use planning, ecological research, fisheries management, and the blossoming of outdoor recreation in coastal Alaska. Scientists mined sheets like this for habitat mosaics; planners weighed roads against slope and drainage; hikers and boaters navigated with confidence between bluff-top viewpoints and tideline landings. Aesthetically, the sheet exemplifies the agency’s late-20th-century palette: restrained yet luminous color, disciplined typography, and contours that convey form almost tactilely. Historically, the provisional tag captures a frontier of knowledge just before digital workflows transformed revision cycles—preserving, in elegant print, the working intelligence of place at a crucial moment in Alaska’s modern story.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.

For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.

We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.

Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.

Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.

All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

We can also supply old maps and artwork on canvas, foam board, cotton rag, and other materials.

If you would prefer to frame your map or artwork yourself, please read our size guide before ordering.

Every Unique Maps piece begins with an authentic cartographic source or an original design from our London studio.

For our historic maps, we source rare originals from libraries, archives, auction houses and private collections around the world. We carefully restore each map for print—repairing age-related damage, balancing colour and improving clarity while preserving its original detail, texture and character.

Once restored, the map is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.

Our map prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks, creating a rich, non-glossy finish designed to last. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.

Canvas, cotton-rag and other specialist presentations are also available. Learn more about our materials and finishes.
