Continue readingPierre-Joseph Redouté’s Plate 49 from Description des plantes rares cultivées à Malmaison et à Navarre, published in 1813, presents Ixora speciosa as a poised vertical arrangement of brilliant red flowers and deep green foliage. A slender central stem rises through a fan of broad leaves to support the densely packed flower head, whose many small blooms form the plate’s vivid focal point. Set against an otherwise unoccupied pale ground, the plant appears at once scientifically isolated and elegantly composed.
The plate belongs to a series devoted to rare species cultivated at Malmaison and Navarre, estates associated with Empress Joséphine and the sophisticated horticultural culture of Napoleonic France. Such publications brought together botanical study, collecting and connoisseurship: plants valued for their rarity could be recorded with sufficient clarity for close examination while also being presented as objects of exceptional visual refinement. Redouté was particularly suited to this task. One of the most celebrated botanical illustrators of the early nineteenth century, he united exact observation with an instinct for balance, rhythm and spacious presentation.
A closer look
The composition leads the eye upwards. At the base, overlapping leaves spread to either side of the stem, their varied angles preventing the arrangement from becoming rigidly symmetrical. Some turn towards the viewer and reveal their full shape; others are seen more obliquely, creating a shallow but convincing sense of layering. Fine veins run through the foliage, while shifts from dark, cool green to lighter tones articulate folds, surfaces and edges without the need for dramatic shadow.
Above this leafy structure, the flower cluster gathers into a compact red crown. Individual blossoms remain legible within the larger mass: tiny petals are separated by precise contours and delicate tonal changes, with deeper crimson concentrated in the denser areas and softer red towards some of the petal edges. The contrast with the green below is immediate, yet the narrow stem creates a visual pause between foliage and bloom. This measured interval of open space gives the flower head an almost weightless quality.
The pale beige background plays an active role in the design. With no landscape, vessel or decorative border to distract from the specimen, every branching point and change of orientation can be followed clearly. At the foot of the plate, the inscription “Ixora Speciosa” appears in an elegant, lightly flourished script. Its restrained placement preserves the spaciousness of the page while identifying the plant in the manner of a botanical record.
Context and significance
Redouté worked at a moment when botanical illustration served several audiences at once. It supported the study and classification of plants, documented specimens gathered into notable European gardens, and satisfied an appetite for publications in which scientific knowledge was expressed through accomplished design. The gardens represented in this series belonged to a culture of ambitious cultivation, where unusual species testified to far-reaching networks of travel, exchange and plant collecting.
What distinguishes this plate is the ease with which these purposes coexist. The clear rendering of stem, leaf and flower makes the specimen intelligible, yet the distribution of forms across the page is never merely diagrammatic. Redouté turns botanical description into a carefully paced composition: broad leaves establish the lower rhythm, the attenuated stem draws the gaze upwards, and the concentrated red inflorescence provides a memorable conclusion.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
