A single open flower commands the centre of the composition, its broad rose-pink petals gathered around a dense, golden-yellow heart. Beneath it, slender stems and finely divided foliage spread outwards in airy green sprays, their almost feathery intricacy making the bloom appear still more substantial.
Known as the “Raphael of flowers”, Redouté brought together botanical scrutiny and an exceptional sense of pictorial balance. His flower studies belonged to an early nineteenth-century culture fascinated by classification and the close observation of the natural world, yet they were never merely utilitarian records. In this plate, the identifying structure of the plant is made fully legible while the specimen is arranged with the economy and grace of an independent work of art.
A closer look
The flower is shown face-on but not rigidly symmetrical. Five prominent petals overlap around the centre, each shaped by gentle tonal shifts: the colour deepens towards the base and softens towards the outer edges, where pale highlights give the surface a lightly translucent quality. Fine veins and restrained shadowing prevent the petals from reading as flat areas of pink. At their centre, a multitude of tiny yellow forms creates a concentrated point of texture and colour, set against the smoother expanses surrounding it.
The foliage provides an intricate counter-rhythm. Needle-fine leaf divisions radiate from the stems, crossing and separating against the warm cream ground. Darker green accents distinguish individual strands, while softer passages keep the mass of leaves from becoming visually heavy. A curved stem enters from the lower right and rises towards the blossom, lending the arrangement a natural asymmetry; the flower seems to hover above a loose, fan-like network of greenery rather than sitting upon a conventional bouquet.
At the lower edge, the Latin name Paeonia tenuifolia is balanced by the French “Pivoine à feuilles linaires”. These small inscriptions anchor the elegant composition in its botanical purpose. The word “Chapézy” also appears beneath the principal text. Their restrained placement leaves the specimen surrounded by generous negative space, ensuring that even the most delicate leaf tips remain clearly visible.
Context and significance
Redouté was among the defining botanical artists of his era, admired for transforming precise plant description into images of unusual refinement. Working in France during a period when botanical knowledge, horticulture and collecting were closely intertwined, he developed a visual language in which scientific information and decorative beauty reinforce one another. The plant is isolated for study, but never made to look inert: subtle curves, overlaps and gradations preserve a sense of growth and living structure.
The fernleaf peony is particularly suited to this approach. Its broad, saturated flower and remarkably narrow foliage offer two very different kinds of botanical form within the same specimen. Redouté uses that distinction to organise the entire plate, setting concentrated colour against filigree line and rounded petals against branching, linear leaves. The result is both an exacting record of a named plant and a remarkably lucid meditation on its contrasting textures.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Every restored art print begins with the original artist’s work—never an AI-generated replacement.
Our London studio works from carefully selected source material from museums, libraries, archives and private collections. We restore age-related damage, faded colour and imperfect reproduction while preserving the artist’s composition, brushwork, line, texture and period character.
We do not use generative AI to redraw, reinterpret or invent the artwork. Digital restoration is used only to recover and reproduce the original work as faithfully as possible.
Once restored, the master artwork is prepared for your chosen size and finish. Your piece is then printed and, where selected, framed close to its delivery destination.
Our giclée art prints use acid-free 200gsm archival matte paper and fade-resistant pigment inks for a rich, museum-quality finish. Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
