WeiterlesenLiqueurs Fines, Wauters De Busscher, Malines, produced by Imp. Max Cremnitz in 1874, turns a liqueur advertisement into a bustling decorative spectacle. The name “WAUTERS DE BUSSCHER” dominates the centre in emphatic red lettering, framed by scrolling ornament, palm fronds and a troupe of animated cherubic children. Against the pale yellow ground, accents of green, blue and scarlet remain crisp and assertive, creating the immediate visual impact required of a poster competing for attention in the nineteenth-century street.
The design belongs to a period in which commercial lithography was transforming advertising into an increasingly ambitious branch of visual culture. Rather than presenting the product through text alone, the poster surrounds the Wauters De Busscher name with abundance, play and claims of distinction. Its association with Malines—the French name for the Belgian city of Mechelen—is stated as part of the brand’s identity, while the line “Maison fondée en 1808” gives the business an advertised pedigree considerably older than the poster itself. Branding, entertainment and reassurance are compressed into a single, highly orchestrated composition.
A closer look
The typographic hierarchy is carefully staged. “LIQUEURS FINES” appears across the upper portion in a cooler blue-green serif face, but the eye is quickly drawn down to the much larger red company name. Ornamental flourishes soften the solidity of these letters, allowing the wording to merge with the surrounding illustration rather than sitting apart from it. A decorative border contains the activity, giving the poster the character of an elaborate label enlarged to architectural scale.
Across the upper edge, palms bend into the composition, their long green leaves forming a loose canopy over the lettering. Small figures climb among the trunks and fronds, adding movement to what might otherwise have been a rigidly symmetrical advertisement. The foliage is more closely observed than its bold graphic role initially suggests: veins articulate the leaves, while the children’s hair, expressions and varied poses reward a nearer look. These touches of descriptive detail sit within an otherwise flat, evenly lit arrangement, balancing pictorial charm with poster-like clarity.
The lower section brings the commercial message down to the level of barrels and bottles. Putti gather around the containers, each occupied differently; one raises a bottle aloft, turning the product into a miniature trophy. At the lower left, a barrel is accompanied by the word “SUPERIEUR”, while a cluster of medal-like emblems at the upper right contributes another familiar language of quality and recognition. The imagery is playful, yet every element ultimately redirects attention towards the goods and their maker.
Context and significance
By the 1870s, improvements in commercial printing had made vivid, large-scale advertising an increasingly conspicuous presence in European towns and cities. Posters had to communicate rapidly, often from a distance, and this design demonstrates the resulting combination of bold typography, simplified colour contrasts and memorable figurative incident. The warm cream-yellow field prevents the crowded composition from becoming visually heavy, while red lettering and green palms establish a clear sequence of attention.
Imp. Max Cremnitz’s poster is especially engaging for the way it refuses to separate information from ornament. The company name is both message and visual centrepiece; the bottles and barrels are simultaneously merchandise and props in a comic tableau. Even the exuberant palms and airborne figures are made to serve the graphic structure, carrying the eye around the central wording. The result preserves the persuasive energy of nineteenth-century advertising while offering a richly detailed glimpse of the period’s expanding commercial imagination.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24in (45x60cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
