WeiterlesenSt Raphaël Quinquina, produced by the French printing firm Imp. Camis in 1891, turns an advertisement for an aperitif into a forceful orchestration of colour and lettering. A field of intense red carries the brand name across the centre in monumental black characters, their pale outlines separating each letter crisply from the background. Orange accents, decorative borders and a winged figure at the upper left add complexity without weakening the immediate commercial message: the name is meant to be read at a glance and remembered.
The poster belongs to the flourishing visual culture of Belle Époque France, when improvements in colour printing helped advertisements become a conspicuous feature of modern urban life. Chromolithography enabled printers to combine saturated colour, illustration and increasingly adventurous typography in designs capable of commanding attention in busy public settings. Quinquina—an aperitif flavoured with quinine-bearing cinchona—was one of many branded drinks promoted through this new graphic language. Rather than relying on extensive description, Imp. Camis gives St Raphaël a distinctive visual identity through contrast, scale and ornament.
A closer look
The composition is horizontally organised, with the central inscription acting almost as architecture. “St. Raphaël Quinquina” stretches broadly across the design, its dark letterforms edged in white so that they appear to sit above the red ground. The lettering balances sharp angles with sweeping curves, combining emphatic readability with the decorative finish expected of late nineteenth-century commercial design. Intertwining motifs around the title soften its block-like weight and guide the eye laterally from one word to the next.
At the upper left, a finely drawn winged figure introduces a more illustrative register. The figure holds a shield marked “VENEAS”; close lines articulate the wings, face and drapery, contrasting with the broad, comparatively flat areas of colour elsewhere. Nearby, an emblem-like circular form and smaller flourishes create a concentrated cluster of detail. These elements serve as a visual counterweight to the expansive typography, while the figure’s energetic pose prevents the design from becoming rigid.
Along the lower edge, another band of black lettering begins, “Pour sauvegarder la sécurité des acheteurs et des consommateurs…”. Its smaller scale establishes a clear hierarchy: brand first, supporting information second. A restrained pale border contains the brilliant red field, while repeated ornament at the top provides a finishing frame. The limited palette is particularly effective. Hot reds and oranges generate intensity; black supplies authority and definition; narrow white outlines preserve clarity amid the density of the design.
Context and significance
Advertisements of this period occupied a productive middle ground between illustration and modern graphic design. Their makers had to organise text, image and colour for rapid public recognition, yet they frequently drew upon the decorative vocabulary of contemporary print culture. In St Raphaël Quinquina, ornament is not merely an embellishment added around a message: it helps structure that message, distinguishing the principal name from emblems, explanatory copy and framing devices.
The result is characteristic of an era in which branded goods acquired personalities through visual repetition. Imp. Camis presents the aperitif not through a naturalistic drinking scene but through heraldic imagery, commanding typography and an unmistakable red-orange palette. More than a surviving beverage advertisement, the poster reveals how late nineteenth-century printers transformed commerce into a highly visible part of the city’s cultural landscape.
Choosing the right size and finish
Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones. Use the room preview, model image and size guide to see how the proportions and scale will work in your space.
If you need an exact size, specialist framing or help planning a larger display, ask our workshop for advice.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x14in (90x35cm) version of this art print.
Where personalisation is available, you can add a short title or dedication, or one considered visual detail. See examples of personalised artwork.
Choose Original to retain the colour and character of the source artwork, or Aged for a warmer, more antique appearance. See examples of our Aged artwork.
Every piece is produced to archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte art paper. Choose an art print, framed art print or framed canvas using the finish options above.
Framed art prints use crystal-clear optical acrylic for excellent clarity, lower weight and safer delivery than glass. Each piece arrives professionally framed and ready to hang.
Selected artworks can be produced at statement sizes up to 3 metres (10ft). Custom sizing and specialist framing are also available. If the exact option you need is not listed, contact our workshop.
This artwork is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The work is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present an art print without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas art and explore the differences between my different finishes.
