The Catalan Atlas, crafted circa 1375 by Cresques Abraham of the Majorcan cartographic school, stands as the zenith of medieval map-work and the most important medieval map in the Catalan language. A Jewish book illuminator famed for mappae mundi and compasses, Cresques fused erudition with dazzling imagery. The seas undulate in vertical bands of wavy blue, while cities bristle with colored flags proclaiming allegiance. Religious symbology distinguishes Christian centers crowned with crosses from others capped by domes, all gravitating around the Atlas’s spiritual anchor: Jerusalem at the center. Designed to be read flat, with inscriptions oriented toward the margins, this grand synthesis marries art and knowledge. Its distinctive compass rose marks the first known use on a portolan chart.

Spanning Europe, North and West Africa, and the fabled Orient from India to Cathay (China), the Atlas distills the geographical understanding of the late 14th century into a legible, enthralling panorama. Cresques synthesized sailors’ observations with medieval travel literature—above all Marco Polo—then added narrative texts that explain local customs, rulers, and the sources of wealth. Human figures in varied dress animate deserts, steppes, and coastal markets; stylized landforms and waterways guide the eye along caravan paths and sea lanes. Trade routes thread the Mediterranean to Saharan entrepôts and onward to Indian Ocean ports, with pictorial cues to gold, spices, and silk. The result is both itinerary and encyclopedia, a lucid guide to power, profit, and belief.

Political and spiritual cartography interlace across the sheet. Crosses signal Christian strongholds; domes and other emblems mark Islamic and non-Christian cities; and a riot of colored banners records the shifting allegiances of empires and towns. The realms of the Golden Horde are plotted alongside major European and North African cities and bustling Mediterranean ports—centers of maritime trade set amid a mesh of rhumb-like bearings radiating from the compass rose. The Atlas’s unique orientation, with images and text turning toward the edges, reinforces its function as a table atlas meant for consultation. Readers could decode sovereignty, faith, and commerce at a glance, a clarity unmatched in contemporary mappae mundi or purely nautical charts.

West Africa receives an unprecedented prominence. Most famously, Mansa Musa of the Mali Empire appears enthroned, gleaming orb of gold in hand, an emblem of the Niger’s great bullion and the lure of trans-Saharan caravans. Nearby polities—Kanem-Bornu, the Yoruba heartland of Ife, and coastal trade cities—anchor a network of routes that fed Mediterranean markets. Illustrations and captions detail the extraction and movement of wealth, from goldfields to salt and textiles, transforming distant rumors into legible geography. In portraying rulers, resources, and roads together, the Atlas shaped Europe’s imagination of Africa and influenced later quests for commerce, charting a world where the desert was not emptiness but a highway of exchange.

To the east, the Atlas moves from the courts of Cathay to Indian cities and East Asian regions, mingling keen observation with the marvels of lore. The Kingdom of Organa and the vast sway of the Golden Horde bracket the Silk Road, while ports of the Orient beckon with spices and gems. Myth and scripture surface at the frontiers: the apocalyptic nations of Gog and Magog stand as sentinels of the unknown, reminding readers where certainty gave way to wonder. Through crisp vignettes and explanatory notes, Cresques reconciles sacred geography—Jerusalem at the world’s heart—with the practical intelligence of merchants and pilots, capturing the late medieval mind at the cusp of global connection.

My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). Mein Standardrahmen ist ein Galerie-Stil-Rahmen aus schwarzem Eschenholz. Er ist einfach und sieht ziemlich modern aus. Mein Standardrahmen ist etwa 20 mm (0,8 Zoll) breit.

Ich verwende super-klares Acryl (Plexiglas/Acrylt) für das Glas des Rahmens. Es ist leichter und sicherer als Glas – und es sieht besser aus, da die Reflexion geringer ist.

Sechs Standardrahmenfarben sind kostenlos erhältlich (schwarz, dunkelbraun, dunkelgrau, Eiche, weiß und antikgold).

Die meisten Karten, Kunstwerke und Illustrationen sind auch als gerahmte Leinwand erhältlich. Wir verwenden matte (nicht glänzende) Baumwollleinwand, spannen sie über einen nachhaltig beschafften Buchenrahmen und 'schweben' dann das Stück innerhalb eines Holzrahmens. Das Endergebnis ist ziemlich schön, und es gibt keine Verglasung, die im Weg ist.

Alle Rahmen werden "bereit zum Aufhängen" geliefert, entweder mit einer Schnur oder Halterungen auf der Rückseite. Sehr große Rahmen haben schwere Aufhängeplatten und/oder eine Montageschiene. Wenn Sie Fragen haben, können Sie bitte Kontakt aufnehmen.

Meine Karten sind äußerst hochwertige Reproduktionen von Originalkarten.

Ich beziehe originale, seltene Karten aus Bibliotheken, Auktionshäusern und Privatsammlungen auf der ganzen Welt, restauriere sie in meiner Londoner Werkstatt und erstelle dann mit speziellen Giclée-Tinten und -Druckern wunderschöne Karten, die sogar noch besser aussehen als das Original.

Meine Karten werden auf säurefreiem, mattem Archivpapier (nicht glänzend) gedruckt, das sich sehr hochwertig anfühlt und fast wie Karton aussieht. Technisch gesehen beträgt das Papiergewicht/die Papierdicke 10mil/200g/m². Es eignet sich perfekt zum Einrahmen.

Ich drucke mit UV-lichtbeständigen Ultrachrome-Giclée-Pigmenttinten von Epson – einige der besten Tinten, die Sie finden können.

Ich kann auch machen Karten auf Leinwand, Baumwolllappen und andere exotische Materialien.
