WeiterlesenPublished in 1927 from surveys completed that same year, the United States Geological Survey sheet titled “Remington” captures a richly detailed portion of northern Virginia at 1:48,000, centering on Warrenton and the country stretching toward Remington, Catlett, and Goldvein. Its “Advance” designation gives the map particular interest: it belongs to the practical working tradition of USGS cartography, issued to put up-to-date terrain intelligence quickly into circulation. The sheet records a landscape poised between rural continuity and modern change, with roads, rail corridors, streams, churches, settlements, and relief rendered in the disciplined graphic language of early twentieth-century federal mapping. For Warrenton and Fauquier County, long associated with colonial routes and Civil War movement, the map offers a precise 1927 portrait of place.
The United States Geological Survey had, by the 1920s, refined a cartographic style that balanced scientific rigor with remarkable visual clarity. This map’s contour lines give form to the rolling Piedmont terrain, translating subtle rises, ridges, hollows, and stream valleys into an elegant system of measured curves. Roads and trails appear as a web of local movement, while place names anchor the sheet in lived geography: Grace Church, Broad Run, Cedar Run, Little River, Cub Run, and the Rappahannock River all contribute to the map’s layered sense of settlement and landscape. The design is understated but exacting, characteristic of USGS work from this era, in which topography, transportation, and habitation are made legible without sacrificing detail.
Warrenton, the principal town shown, occupies a historically resonant position in Fauquier County, where turnpikes, courthouse culture, agriculture, and military history intersected. During the Civil War, the surrounding countryside saw troop movements, cavalry activity, and strategic use of roads linking the Rappahannock crossings, Manassas, and the Shenandoah approaches. By 1927, the map reveals a quieter but still deeply connected rural region, its towns and hamlets tied together by minor roads, rail lines, churches, mills, and stream crossings. Nearby Remington, set close to the Rappahannock River, appears within a broader corridor shaped by water, agriculture, and transportation. Catlett and Goldvein add further texture, evoking a landscape of farms, mineral prospects, crossroads communities, and local commerce.
The hydrology of the sheet is especially compelling, with the Rappahannock River serving as one of the defining natural features of the region. Smaller waterways such as Broad Run, Little River, Cub Run, and Cedar Run carve the terrain into a sequence of valleys and divides, their courses clarified by the surrounding contour patterns. White Oak Swamp hints at the wetter, low-lying environments that punctuate the Piedmont, contrasting with the higher ground of the Mosby Range and other ridged landscapes. These details make the map more than a guide to roads and towns; it is a record of drainage, elevation, and landform, showing the natural framework that shaped settlement, farming, travel, and local identity.
Seen today, the “Remington” sheet is a fascinating document of northern Virginia before the full force of suburban expansion transformed the region. Modern corridors such as Virginia Route 28 and Virginia Route 29 connect the area to a wider metropolitan geography, yet on this map the emphasis remains on local roads, rural routes, and the intimate scale of county life. The area associated today with Lake Manassas, for example, is understood here through its earlier watershed and terrain context, before later twentieth-century development altered the landscape. Extending toward Fairfax County and across Fauquier’s rolling countryside, the map preserves a moment when historical towns, river systems, and agricultural patterns still defined the character of this part of Virginia.

With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.
