WeiterlesenTitled “Venice” and published in 1944 by the U.S. Geological Survey, this 1:31,680 topographical map presents a revealing wartime-era portrait of Venice, Florida, and its surrounding Sarasota County landscape. The city appears as a compact Gulf Coast settlement, set between the open sweep of the Gulf of Mexico and a hinterland of ponds, marshes, roads, railways, and lightly developed residential areas. Its restrained cartographic language gives particular clarity to a place on the cusp of transformation: still strongly defined by water, low relief, and rural land patterns, yet already linked to the wider region by transportation corridors and civic boundaries. As a historical document, it captures Venice before the fuller postwar expansion that would reshape much of Florida’s Gulf Coast.
The map bears the unmistakable discipline of the U.S. Geological Survey, an institution renowned for bringing scientific rigor to the mapping of American terrain. Founded in the late nineteenth century, the USGS became the nation’s authoritative cartographic voice, producing maps that served engineers, planners, geologists, hydrologists, soldiers, and citizens alike. In this Venice sheet, that tradition is visible in the careful gridding, the clean hierarchy of roads and railways, and the precise differentiation of land and water. Rather than romanticizing the coast, the map renders it analytically, making the quiet complexity of the region legible: drainage patterns, settlement edges, transportation routes, precinct divisions, and subtle topographic shifts all share the page in a balanced scientific composition.
Venice’s coastal geography is the heart of the map’s appeal. The Gulf of Mexico anchors the western edge, while inland waters—lakes, ponds, wetlands, and marshy tracts—reveal the hydrological character of this low-lying Florida landscape. Elevation changes are necessarily modest, but the topographic information remains essential, showing how even slight variations shaped settlement, road placement, drainage, and habitable ground. The surrounding natural features speak to an environment where land and water intermix, with wetlands forming both ecological richness and practical constraints. In an era before extensive modern development and drainage alteration, this map preserves a more open, fluid version of the Venice area, in which natural systems remain prominent features rather than background scenery.
The human geography shown here is equally compelling. Venice appears with residential neighborhoods and connecting roads, while railways tie the community to surrounding parts of Sarasota County and beyond. Precinct boundaries, including Precinct 7 and Precinct 8, add a civic layer to the map, reminding the viewer that this was not merely a coastal resort or rural settlement, but an organized community with political and administrative definition. The date, 1944, places the map in the midst of the Second World War, when Florida’s climate and open spaces made it strategically useful for military training and infrastructure. Against that broader national backdrop, the map records the local landscape with quiet exactitude, preserving the everyday geography beneath a moment of global upheaval.
Cartographically, the sheet is distinguished by its clarity and restraint. Color differentiation separates water bodies, landforms, routes, and settlement features, allowing the viewer to read the terrain at a glance while still rewarding close inspection. The grid layout reinforces the USGS commitment to measurement and orientation, giving the map both practical utility and visual order. For today’s observer, its fascination lies in the contrast between then and now: rural edges where subdivisions would later spread, wetlands before later alteration, roads and railways as primary arteries in a still-emerging coastal city. More than a map of Venice, it is a finely composed record of a Florida landscape poised between natural abundance, civic growth, and modern development.

Every piece is printed to museum-grade archival standards using fade-resistant pigment inks on acid-free matte paper. Choose an unframed map print, framed map or canvas using the finish options above. Framed maps use crystal-clear optical acrylic and arrive ready to hang.
With its rich detail and strong sense of place, this map makes a considered gift for a new home, anniversary, retirement or anyone with a personal connection to the area shown. Still deciding? Explore our collection of rare old and vintage maps to discover another place, period or style.
This map is also available as a float framed canvas, sometimes known as a shadow gap framed canvas or canvas floater. The map is printed on artist's cotton canvas and then stretched over a handmade box frame. We then "float" the canvas inside a wooden frame, which is available in a range of colours (black, dark brown, oak, antique gold and white). This is a wonderful way to present a map without glazing in front. See some examples of float framed canvas maps and explore the differences between my different finishes.
For something truly unique, this map is also available in "Unique 3D", our trademarked process that dramatically transforms the map so that it has a wonderful sense of depth. We combine the original map with detailed topography and elevation data, so that mountains and the terrain really "pop". For more info and examples of 3D maps, check my Unique 3D page.

Titled “Venice” and published in 1944 by the U.S.
