This is a print of sheet 9 of the Map of London Poverty, created by Charles Booth in 1898-9.
These 12 maps of London were an epic undertaking to map out the various levels of poverty and affluence of everyone in London. These are some of the most detailed historic maps of London ever made.
Because of the huge amount of detail on this map, I would recommend buying the 36x20 inch (90x50cm) map at least.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70x38 inches (180x95cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
Please note the unframed 36x20 and 24x13 inch maps have white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
The model in the listing image is holding the 36x20 inch version of this map.
This map shows the Inner Southern District, which today would be the London boroughs of Southwark and the northern part of Lambeth. Elephant and Castle didn't exist yet, but you can see the confluence of roads that would soon become it. Also prominent in this historic map of London is Bethlehem Lunatic Asylum - which is now the Imperial War Museum!
The level of detail in these maps is breathtaking, with individual houses coloured to show whether they are "vicious semi-criminal" (black); "very poor" (dark blue); "poor" (light blue); "mixed" (red); "fairly comfortable" (light red); "middle class" (bright red); "upper-middle and upper class" (yellow).
This world map would make a perfect gift for someone from south London or who has London in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
