This rather fascinating pictorial map of the West Country was created by A.E. Taylor and published in 1932 by Pratts Oil - which was known as Standard Oil in the US and in a few months would be known as Esso in the UK.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (31x46cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 80 inches (200cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (91.5x61cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the same area by Jaon Blaeu in 1665.
Taylor was commissioned to create a series of maps of the United Kingdom and Ireland to encourage people to drive around the country in their new-fangled motor carriages (aka cars) - which, of course, would consume Esso oil!
Most of the major towns and cities in the West Country are visible on this map - and in many cases, accompanied by a beautiful little illustration of the town's high street or other notable landmark. Along the coastline there are sketches of the cliffs and hills that can be seen there. Dotted around the map are phrases from famous books or poems.
The map mostly focuses on the classic 'West Country' of Somerset, Dorset, Devon and Cornwall, but Gloucestershire just pokes its head in at the top with Bristol, and Wiltshire is on the right hand edge with the city of Salisbury.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your town! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the West Country or who is abit of a petrolhead or car history buff.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
