The Environs of London by G.W. Colton in 1886 shows how large London had become at the peak of the British Empire. Most of what we now consider the inner city boroughs are in place - but the suburbs are still fields and forests.
It is also clear from this map how south London was mostly a collection of smaller towns and villages, while the London north of the river was already very densely populated indeed.
This map looks great at all sizes: 16x20 inches (40x50cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 40x50 inches (100x125cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options
The map extends to Kingston, Crystal Palace and Bromley in the south, Ealing and Richmond in the west, Finchley, Southgate and Chigwell in the north, and East Ham and Abbey Wood in the east.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from London or someone who has a keen interest in the history of London.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
