Published in 1885 by C.J. Dyer, this map of Phoenix, Arizona shows the then small town when it had a population of just 3,000.
This map is unusually good for a birds eye map of a small town in 1885. It's probably one of the finest birds eye views ever made, and certainly the best old map of Phoenix ever published. It is also the first ever published map of Phoenix. Basically... it's an amazing map.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 150 inches (380cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
The 'eye' of this map sits somewhere roughly above the Warehouse District, looking northeast across what is now Downtown Phoenix.
It looks like many of the 'people' streets (Washington, Jefferson, etc) were originally laid down when the town was founded. But today's numbered avenues didn't exist back then - instead, they were other streets that have since lost their names (Cortez, Mojave, Montezuma, etc!)
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from Phoenix or who has Arizona in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.

Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
