This is one of the finest and rarest examples of the first accurate map of Iceland, originally published by Dutch mapmaker Abraham Ortelius in his 1595 edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum - the most important collection of world maps of the 16th century.
There's a remarkable amount of detail on this map, showing many of Iceland's mountains, fjords, volcanoes (check out the explosive red plume over the volcano!) rivers and villages.
Like many of Ortelius' maps, this one is covered in animals and mythical sea monsters.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (30x45cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm), 18x24 inches (45x60cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90 inches (230cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x18 inch (60x45cm) version of this map.
Many of Iceland's towns and villages are shown on this map, though their names may be different than their modern forms. This is mostly because of a translation issue: Ortelius based this map on the work of an Icelander, and he likely couldn't interpret some of the unusual letters used in their language.
Reykjavik is here, but under another name - seemingly an old spelling of 'Bessastaðir', the official residence of the President of Iceland. Keflavik is here, under its same name as today, as are many villages, fjords and mountains.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from Iceland or who has the Vikings in their heart.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
