This fascinating, fantastically detailed and very rare map of Africa by British mapmaker Emanuel Bowen has significant historical value. It is shown here in its original, monochrome copperplate format.
If you are looking for a map focusing just on Negroland, please check this listing.
I also have the same Negroland map but with almost-300-years-old handcolouring, which may better suit your aesthetic/decor.
This map shows Africa after the great African empires had fallen, but before Europe had marched through and colonialised much of the continent. There is a small British presence in Guinea, and the effect of slavery is starting to show on the Gold Coast, Slave Coast and Tooth Coast (the original name for Ivory Coast!)
But for the most part, colonial powers haven't yet marched down the middle of Africa. This map shows Africa back when it was ruled by the great independent Kingdoms, including Benin, Judah, Tafilet (now Morocco and Algeria), Agades, Zanfara and Bito. The presence of many great nomadic tribes is also shown on this map.
As is the way of cartography, most places on the map are labelled with their European (British) names, rather than what the locals may have called themselves. Barbary, Nubia, Negroland, etc.
This map looks great at all sizes from 12x16 inches (30x40cm), to 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 24x36 inches (60x90cm). But it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Africa or who is interested in pre-colonial Africa and the start of the slave trade.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
