A beautiful, colourful and wonderfully decorative map of South America, published in 1690 by Italian mapmaker Vincenzo Maria Coronelli.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (30x45cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 160 inches (400cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
The map shows what Europe thought of the New World back in the 17th century. The map is fairly accurate, but there's also imaginary places, mountains, rivers and animals - just to make the map more interesting, really.
You should be able to spot most of the modern countries of South America, though they are mostly under their colonial Spanish names here. For example, Venezuela is here, but it's contained within the giant Spanish colony of Tierra Firme.
Notably, much of what would be Argentina and Uruguay today, is shown as 'Terra Magellanica' - a placeholder name, like Terra Australia, that referred to the mythical (and unknown) 'southern Land'. For a long time, people believed there was a huge landmass at the bottom of the planet that balanced out all the land in the north.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain town or village is on this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from South America or who is interested in the history of Spanish colonisation of the Americas.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
