This is one of the oldest, finest and most fascinating maps of Great Britain, showing the nation as it was during Saxon times in 500-700 AD - an era known as the Heptarchy, as England and Wales were split into 7 Angle-Saxon kingdoms.
The map was engraved by Jan Jansson in 1645, and it looks very similar to the John Speed and Saxton maps of the British Isles. This is an extremely fine copy of a rare map - it's unusual to find a map this old that has been preserved this well, particularly in full colour.
Many of the towns and cities of Scotland, Wales and England can be seen on this map - and even a few on the west coast of Ireland.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (31x41cm), 18x24 inches (45.5x61cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 110 inches wide (280cm) . Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (51x40.5cm) version of this map.
On the left hand side of the map are 7 Anglo-Saxon kings of the pre-Christian era, and on the right side are 7 Anglo-Saxon kings who were Christian - and they're pictured 'receiving' Christianity or being martyred in its name.
The seven kingdoms at the time of the Heptarchy were: East Anglia, Mercia (modern day midlands), Northumbria, Wessex (southwest England), Essex, Kent and Sussex. I have a lovely map of the last three kingdoms by Christopher Saxton here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/862971183/old-map-of-southeast-england-in-1575
Both England and Wales look very close to their modern, cartographical forms - though Scotland looks a bit misshapen, and the Hebrides are perhaps a bit too big.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone who has an interest in the history of Great Britain or the Saxon times.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
