This masterpiece map of the Turkish Empire was created in 1714 by Herman Moll, the finest English cartographer and mapmaker of the 18th century.
In the early 18th century the Turkish Empire, or the Ottoman Empire as we call it now, was at its greatest extent, covering much of North Africa to the west, Iraq to the east, and north to Romania and Bulgaria in the Balkans.
This map is an unusual size - it's extremely wide - and would make a fantastic statement piece above a sofa, table, mantelpiece or staircase.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18 inches (31x46cm), 24x14 Inches (60x35cm) and 24x36 inches (61x91.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
The map looks its best when printed large.I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 120 inches (300cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 36x24 inch (90x60cm) version of this map.
Please note the unframed 24x14 inch map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
This is one of the finest and most detailed maps of the Ottoman Empire. It was compiled at an intriguing point of history as Europe looked upon the Ottomans as an economic and territorial threat. The map is dotted with dozens of comments and annotations - take a look at them and you'll see that this was definitely put together by a Christian Englishman, not a Turk. There's also a lot of information about British trade, religious and political interests.
This map also has some beautifully detailed inset engravings of Constantinople (Istanbul) and Jerusalem - then and now two of the most important cities of the region.
This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from the former Ottoman Empire, or perhaps someone interested in the history and ethnography of the region.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
