Rose published a series of European socio-comic maps, starting in 1877. Each one depicts the state of Europe at the time, if you look closely at the interactions between the animals, people and objects. I have a later map from 1900 here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/1001429598/old-map-of-europe-1900-by-fredrick-rose
This first map is widely considered his masterpiece and originated the idea of a Russian Octopus looming over Europe - a motif that would be used by other mapmakers for years to come.
Each country is represented by a person or stereotype that represents the country in some way. If you read the 'Reference' in the bottom left corner it explains who each of the people are.
For example, Italy is "a young girl rejoicing in her newly acquired liberty." while Germany is represented by "her emperor, in uniform, surrounded by shells."
There's a lot of detail to unpack on this one - do take a look at the zoomed in listing images and marvel at how much is going on.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm) and 18x24 inches (45x60cm), but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 20x16 inch (50x40cm) version of this map.
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone interested in European history at the turn of the 19th century.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes our maps pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. We use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in our frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
