This masterfully illustrated map by Earnest Dudley Chase shows a very detailed pictorial map of Japan in 1942. You won't really find a more detailed or interesting map of Japan.
This map shows the notable cities, naval bases, and aircraft used in the Pacific Theatre of WW2, with a specific focus on the bombing of Tokyo. All of America's various aircraft, such as the B17, B24, B34, etc. are listed on this map and many are illustrated.
Somewhat notably, many of Korea's town and city names are different than what you'd expect, as the area belonged to Japan at the time.
Ernest Dudley Chase, who would eventually become one of the most prolific and popular pictorial map makers, originally started his careers as a graphic artist. He didn't start making maps until fairly late in his life, but as you can see, he had a real passion for creating humorous, interesting and incredibly detailed maps. He mostly focused on the US, though he also made a few world maps, and even a few maps made of postage stamps!
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x18in (30.5x46cm), 16x20in (40.5x51cm), 18x24in (45.5x61cm), 24x36in (61x91.5cm), 30x45in (76x114.5cm), 33x50in (84x127cm), 40x60in (102x153cm) and 47x70in (120x178cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90in (229cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 24x36in (61x91.5cm) version of this map.

If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of South West Pacific by US Navy in 1944.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone from Japan or someone interested in the Pacific Rim theatre of World War 2.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
