This wonderful old map of the Western United States of America, California, Oregon and Texas was originally published in 1846. It was created by Samuel Mitchell.
This map shows the Western front of the United States of America as it was in the mid 19th century, with many states still not on the map.
For example, Oklahoma is still Indian Territory - land that had been set aside for the Native Americans. California is split into two on this map: Upper and New California, which had only just been ceded to the US by Mexico, and Old California which is now the Mexican state of Baja California and Baja California Sur.
As you can see, many of today's states are literally not even on the map yet. Washington, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Colorado and New Mexico are all no where to be seen.
Over the next few decades they would be carved out of the giant territories occupied Oregon, California, the Native Americans, and the British Empire owned lands to the north of this map.
This map looks great at all sizes: 10x10 inches (25x25cm), 12x12in (31x31cm), 14x14 inches (36x36cm), 16x16in (41x41cm), 18x18in (46x46cm), 24x24 inches (61x61cm), 36x36 inches (92x92cm), 45x45 inches (114.5x114.5cm), 50x50 inches (127x127cm) and 60x60 inches (152.5x152.5cm), but it looks even better when printed large.
I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 90in (229cm). Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x18in (46x46cm) version of this map.
The fifth listing image shows an example of my map personalisation service.
Please note the unframed 24x24 inches (61x61cm) map has white edges around the map. These edges can help you with framing, or if you don’t need them they are very easy to snip off with scissors. All other maps, including the framed maps, look exactly like the listing images.
If you’re looking for something slightly different, another option would be this amazing map of the United States of America as viewed by a Californian by Ernest Dudley Chase in 1940.
The locations on this map include: Missouri Territory, Iowa, Wisconsin, Indian Territory, Arkansas, North Mexico, Old California (now Baja California in Mexico), Gulf of Mexico and San Francisco.

This would make a wonderful birthday, Christmas, Father's Day, work leaving or housewarming gift for someone interested in the Western United States of America, California, Oregon and Texas or the west of North America at a pivotal point in its history.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.
