This rare old map of Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead was created by surveyor and architect Thomas Oliver in 1830. Oliver was very active at the time and created many surveys and maps of the area.
A lovely engraving of The Castle adorns the top of the map - quite close to where today's St James' Park where Newcastle United play.
This map looks great at all sizes: 8x10 inches (20x25cm), 12x16 inches (30x40cm) and 16x20 inches (40x50cm), but it looks even better when printed large
Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
The model in the listing images is holding the 16x20 inch (40x50cm) version of this map.
If you’re looking for more options, I have another interesting Newcastle map by Tallis & Rapkin in 1581.
Many of Newcastle's old streets are visible, including Percy Street, Gallowgate, and Westgate. Over the river you can see Gateshead, which only consisted of a few streets back in 1830. Present day landmarks like Eldon Square are visible - but alas, 'THE NUNS' no longer exists today.
Interestingly there are a few 'projected streets' that were planned to be built. See if you can guess what streets they eventually became! (And some of them were never built.)
This would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas gift for someone from Newcastle or who has the Tyne in their heart.
This map is available as a giclée print on acid free archival matte paper, or you can buy it framed. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that suits most aesthetics. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame colour or material. My frames are glazed with super-clear museum-grade acrylic (perspex/acrylite), which is significantly less reflective than glass, safer, and will always arrive in perfect condition.

I use a unique process to restore my maps that is massively time consuming and labour intensive. Hunting down the original maps can take months. I use state of the art and eye-wateringly expensive technology to scan and restore the maps. As a result, I guarantee my maps are a cut above the rest - that's why I can offer a no-quibble refund.
Almost all of my maps look amazing at large sizes (200cm, 6.5ft+) and I can frame and deliver them to you as well, via special oversized courier. Contact me to discuss your specific needs.
