Old Map of Sussex, 1811 - First Triangulation Ordnance Survey Chart - Hills, Castles, Steeples - Framed, Unframed Gift
A hugely important, rare and interesting map of Sussex (West, East and Mid) from 1811, created by the Ordnance Survey, which was only a few years old at the time.
This is literally a map of triangles - but they're very important triangles. They're highly accurate triangles between various points of Hampshire, measured using theodolites.
These measurements, using Pythagoras's theorem and a bit of clever interpolation to take the Earth's curvature into account, would lead to the very first accurate map of Britain.
This map looks great at all sizes, but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 50 inches (125cm) wide. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options.
Please note that the smaller unframed map sizes up to 36x20 inches have white strips on the edge that can be easily snipped off (or they may help you with framing!) All other map sizes, and all framed maps, look just like the listing images.
Take a look at the detailed images and try to spot your hometown or favourite landmark! Feel free to message me if you want to confirm if a certain place is on this map. Notably, there are not many towns on this map - they are mostly named landmarks, like hills and church steeples and other high points, like the tops of castles.
This would make a wonderful birthday, housewarming or Christmas gift for someone from Sussex or who is interested in the history of triangulation and modern cartography.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes the map pop out when on a wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
