Engraved by John Rapkin and published by J. Tallis & Co in 1851, this is one of the finest and most detailed historic maps of New South Wales, Australia.
The NSW penal colony had been founded about 60 years prior in 1788 - and you can see that many of Australia's coastal cities had already been founded.
Back in 1851, New South Wales covered a much larger area than it does today. At the top of the map you can see Brisbane, founded in 1824, which is now in Queensland (which wouldn't be formed until 1859).
Port Macquarie is here, as is Newcastle and Tuggerah. Many lakes and bays are also marked, such as Botany Bay and Lake Illawarra (though Wollongong hadn't been formed yet).
Each of the counties of New South Wales are also shown - though there weren't many of them back then!
A handful of beautifully detailed engravings show you some scenes and landscapes from around the territory, including a view of Sydney Cove and The Murray river.
Take a closer look at the listing images and see if you can spot your hometown or favourite holiday location! Contact me if you want to find out if a certain place is on the map or not.
This map looks great at all sizes: 12x16 inches (30x40cm), 16x20 inches (40x50cm), 18x24 inches (45x60cm) and 24x30 (61x76cm) but it looks even better when printed large. I can create beautiful, large prints of this map up to 70 inches (180cm) tall. Please get in touch if you're looking for larger, customised or different framing options. Please note that the unframed 24x30 inch map has white edges that can be easily snipped off - or they may help with framing. All other sizes, and all framed maps, look just like the listing images.
The model in the listing images is holding the 18x24 inch (45x60cm) version of this map.
This map would make a great birthday or Christmas gift for someone from New South Wales or perhaps someone who has holidayed or lived in Sydney for a period of time.
You can order the map itself, or you can order a framed version. The frame is a nice, simple black frame that really makes your map pop out when on the wall. Please get in touch if you'd like a different frame, or if you'd like to frame one of the larger maps. I use super-clear acrylic (perspex/acrylite) in my frames - it's less reflective than glass and better for transport.
