vieux-systeme-rigolo-vintage-genever-poster-1925
Vieux Système Rigolo Vintage Genever Poster, 1925

Oude Genever-Vieux Système Rigolo (1925–1930), created by the Belgian firm Lithographie Artistique and issued in 1925, turns the promotion of a traditional spirit into a lively social performance. Two impeccably dressed men dominate the foreground: one presents the bottle with theatrical enthusiasm while the other raises a small glass. Their black-and-white evening clothes stand crisply against a deep navy ground, animated by vivid red lettering, warm cream details and flashes of pink and gold.

The poster advertises oude genever, the juniper-flavoured spirit associated with the Low Countries. Its imagery belongs to an era in which commercial posters gave established products a distinctly modern public personality. Here, an old-style drink is not surrounded by barrels, rustic interiors or nostalgic symbolism; instead, it appears in a polished world of fashionable dress, conviviality and graphic spectacle. The bilingual Dutch and French wording reflects the poster’s Belgian setting, while the bold visual hierarchy makes the brand legible at a glance.

A closer look

The composition descends from typography to action. Across the upper section, the product name is set in broad, stylised lettering, its red and white forms made especially forceful by the dark blue field. Below, the two principal figures overlap the busier social scene behind them. This contrast between strongly defined foreground characters and more loosely suggested background patrons creates depth without sacrificing the flat, emphatic character of the design.

The men are differentiated through gesture and detail. The bottle-holder, wearing a black hat, leans into the presentation with an expansive pose; his companion steadies the glass at the lower left. A pink rose pinned to a lapel adds a small note of refinement amid the poster’s harder contrasts. Subtle variations in the dark jackets keep the formal clothing from becoming a single black mass, while the faces and shirtfronts provide pale accents that lead the eye between bottle, glass and expression.

A decorative deep-blue border contains the activity, with a cream band along the bottom offering a quieter base for the distillery information. The wording “STOKERIJ – DISTILLERIE TH. BEKAERT” is followed by “ST. AMANDSBERG MONT ST. AMAND”, again pairing Dutch and French. Decorative swirls and glimpsed figures in the upper background suggest a festive gathering, but they remain secondary to the clear commercial sequence: name, personalities, bottle and maker.

Context and significance

Lithographie Artistique was active in Belgium during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when illustrated advertising had become an essential part of urban visual culture. Posters needed to function at speed, competing for attention through recognisable silhouettes, condensed narratives and assertive lettering. This design does all three. The exchange between the two gentlemen provides a miniature scene of sociability, while the restricted palette ensures that the product message remains immediate.

Its Art Deco-style character lies less in elaborate ornament than in simplification: flat colour, clean-edged forms, rhythmic typography and an elegant compression of space. Yet the poster retains a humorous, almost stage-like energy. That balance between sophistication and exuberance gives Oude Genever-Vieux Système Rigolo its particular appeal—a period advertisement in which typography, fashion and convivial gesture work together to make a traditional drink feel thoroughly contemporary.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
