t-wit-stoopke-vintage-drinks-advertising-poster-by-ernest-godfrinon-1907
’t Wit Stoopke Vintage Drinks Advertising Poster by Ernest Godfrinon, 1907

Ernest Godfrinon’s ‘t Wit Stoopke, dated 1907, turns a beverage advertisement into a spirited tavern scene. Gathered tightly around the bar, its patrons drink, converse and attend to one another beneath a hanging lamp, while bottles crowd the shelves behind them. Warm chestnut browns, deep reds and creamy beige establish the room’s convivial atmosphere; touches of blue, green and black give the individual figures definition. Rather than isolating the advertised drink as a pristine commercial object, Godfrinon embeds it in a recognisable social world.

The poster belongs to a period when illustrated advertising was flourishing across Europe and commercial imagery frequently drew upon the compositional sophistication of contemporary art. Godfrinon was a Belgian artist active in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when Art Nouveau and related decorative styles encouraged strong silhouettes, flowing contours and carefully orchestrated lettering. Here, however, polished design is combined with the earthy character of a local drinking house. The vernacular title reinforces that regional identity, while the French words VIEUX SYSTÈME and the phrase Marca “T WIT STOOPKE” give the lower part of the design the declarative force of an advertisement.

A closer look

The central drinker provides the composition with its visual anchor. Dressed in blue, he raises his glass in an easy, relaxed posture, his face picked out by one of the poster’s brightest passages of light. At the lower right, a standing man in a vivid red coat holds a pipe and turns towards the group as though caught mid-conversation. The contrast between the blue and red garments separates the two principal figures from the otherwise brown-toned interior, establishing a clear hierarchy within the busy scene.

Behind them, a woman in a headscarf prepares drinks at the bar. Rows of bottles rise at the upper left, their small highlights suggesting glass and liquid without distracting from the human exchange below. Overlapping bodies create depth, but the room never becomes confused: the bar forms a firm horizontal structure, while the circular lamp at the top centre gathers the scene beneath it. Light falls most clearly across faces and hands, leaving folds of clothing and the recesses of the bar in softer shadow.

Several quieter details deepen the impression of an inhabited neighbourhood tavern. A small black dog stands alert among the patrons’ feet, introducing an almost domestic note amid the drinking and conversation. Patterned floor tiles appear beneath the figures, while distinctions between smooth bottles, heavy coats and softer fabrics lend the interior tactile variety. The typography across the lower section functions as both caption and foundation: bold, decorative lettering grounds the animated gathering above and ensures that sociability remains tied to the advertised name.

Context and significance

‘t Wit Stoopke exemplifies the way early twentieth-century beverage posters could sell through atmosphere as much as through direct description. Its appeal rests on association: drink is presented as part of companionship, conversation and familiar ritual. The asymmetrical grouping gives the scene the immediacy of observed life, yet every element—from the brightly distinguished coats to the shelves of bottles and emphatic lettering—has been organised to communicate quickly in a public setting.

What makes Godfrinon’s design especially engaging is this balance between narrative detail and graphic clarity. It can be read at once as an advertisement, a character study and a glimpse of Belgian popular social life at the beginning of the twentieth century. Even the smallest participant, the watchful dog, contributes to a scene in which commerce is made memorable through warmth, humour and human presence.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
