schlemmerkeller-vintage-wine-restaurant-poster-by-paul-leni-1903
Schlemmerkeller Vintage Wine Restaurant Poster by Paul Leni, 1903

Paul Leni’s Schlemmerkeller Jägerstraße 13. Vornehmes Weinrestaurant (1903–1913), dated 1903, advertises a fashionable Berlin wine restaurant through an unusually concentrated still life. A scarlet lobster sprawls across the lower left, its claws reaching towards a clear glass and lemon, while two dark wine bottles rise at the right like emphatic punctuation marks. Against the warm beige ground, these few objects create a composition that is at once appetising, theatrical and immediately legible.

The poster belongs to the early career of an artist who would later become better known as a film director and production designer. Leni’s subsequent association with the highly stylised visual world of German Expressionist cinema makes this piece of commercial graphic art especially intriguing: well before his work in film, he was already arranging forms for dramatic effect and guiding the eye through contrasts of scale, colour and silhouette. Here that visual intelligence serves the practical needs of advertising, presenting the Schlemmerkeller as a destination for refined urban leisure in pre-war Berlin.

A closer look

The lobster supplies the design’s strongest burst of colour. Its saturated vermilion-red shell is articulated with darker lines along the claws, joints and segmented body, giving a degree of naturalistic texture without disturbing the poster’s broad graphic clarity. The small yellow lemon beside it provides a sharp, acidic accent, while the nearby glass is rendered more delicately: pale highlights and restrained shading suggest its transparency and curved surface.

On the right, the pair of wine bottles forms a dense vertical counterweight to the lobster’s low, spreading shape. Their brown-black bodies stand out firmly against the cream-coloured background, with narrow streaks of white implying glossy glass. One bottle is slightly larger than the other, preventing the grouping from becoming rigidly symmetrical. The objects do not occupy a fully described interior; instead, they seem to float within a shallow pictorial space, closer to emblems of dining and conviviality than to the contents of an actual table.

Typography is an active part of the composition rather than a separate caption. “Schlemmerkeller Jägerstraße 13” commands the upper section in bold lettering, establishing the venue and its address before the eye drops to the food and wine below. At the foot of the poster, “Theater Soupers 3 u. 5 M. Künstler Concert” promotes theatre suppers and artists’ concerts, suggesting an establishment closely connected to Berlin’s evening entertainment. Leni’s name appears at the lower right, neatly embedded within the advertising design.

Context and significance

At the beginning of the twentieth century, posters were central to the visual life of the modern European city. Restaurants, theatres and concert venues competed for attention through designs that needed to communicate quickly from the street. Leni answers that demand by reducing the Schlemmerkeller’s appeal to a memorable ensemble: seafood, wine, elegant lettering and references to after-theatre dining and live performance. The result addresses an affluent metropolitan clientele without requiring an elaborate narrative scene.

What distinguishes the poster is its balance of abundance and economy. A handful of objects conjures an entire social setting, yet each remains crisply isolated and visually forceful. The lobster lends wit and movement; the bottles provide weight; the empty glass introduces a pause between them. Seen in relation to Leni’s later career, this early advertisement offers a compelling glimpse of his ability to turn objects, lettering and empty space into a compact piece of visual theatre.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
