dessower-schlossbrauerei-vintage-bock-beer-poster-by-hans-lindenstaedt-1898
Dessower Schlossbrauerei Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Hans Lindenstaedt, 1898

Hans Lindenstaedt’s Bockbier. Dessower Schlossbrauerei Theodor Gilka, dated 1898, turns a beer advertisement into a piece of exuberant visual comedy. A rosy-cheeked reveller in a brilliant red fool’s cap clasps a placid white goat to his side while presenting a foaming glass mug. Closely cropped and set against a warm beige ground, the pair fill almost the entire composition; below them, the word “BOCKBIER” appears in emphatic red lettering, giving the poster the directness required of an advertisement seen at a glance.

The goat is more than a cheerful mascot. In German, Bock means a billy goat as well as denoting the strong beer style, allowing Lindenstaedt to build the promotion around an instantly legible visual pun. Created for the Dessower Schlossbrauerei and Theodor Gilka, the poster belongs to a period when breweries were increasingly using richly coloured, pictorial advertising to distinguish their products. Rather than relying on a name alone, such designs joined lettering, character and humour into a memorable commercial identity.

A closer look

The figures are arranged in a compact, asymmetrical embrace. The man occupies the left half of the poster, his body angled towards the goat at the right; their heads draw close together near the centre, creating a conspiratorial, almost affectionate encounter. His shadowed face, ruddy cheeks and broad expression contrast with the animal’s pale, calmly modelled head. Fine dark lines articulate the goat’s fur, muzzle and horns, while stronger contours keep both figures clear against the uncluttered background.

Colour establishes the poster’s festive pitch. The saturated vermilion-red of the cap and clothing is set against creamy white fur, with black and grey supplying definition. Small green bells hanging from the fool’s cap add an easily missed accent, their rounded shading giving them a tangible weight. At the lower centre, the beer mug catches sharp highlights along its glass surface; its crown of white foam echoes the goat’s coat and links the advertised drink visually to the comic emblem above it.

The typography forms a second stage beneath the illustration. “BOCKBIER” dominates in large decorative capitals, while “Dessower Schlossbrauerei” and “THEODOR GILKA” establish the brewery and name in a more condensed hierarchy. The varied scale prevents the wording from becoming a mere caption: it acts as part of the composition, balancing the dense group of figures with a firm horizontal base. A thin dark border contains the energetic forms and gives the otherwise open beige field a crisp graphic edge.

Context and significance

By the end of the nineteenth century, the advertising poster had become a particularly effective meeting point between illustration and commerce. Bold colour, simplified depth and large lettering allowed an image to communicate quickly in public space, while distinctive characters encouraged recognition and recall. Lindenstaedt’s design demonstrates that logic with unusual economy. There is little background and no elaborate narrative; instead, the drink, its name and its goat emblem are compressed into one theatrical encounter.

What gives the poster its continuing appeal is the precision with which humour serves graphic clarity. The jester’s bells, the goat’s composed expression and the gleaming mug reward closer inspection, yet the essential message remains immediate. It is a lively example of late nineteenth-century beverage advertising in which an everyday product is given a personality through colour, typography and an ingenious play on words.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
