Vintage Bock Beer Poster by Louis Deutz, 1890

Louis Deutz’s D.G. Yuengling Jr. Brewing Co., Bock Beer, created in 1890, builds its sales pitch around a magnificently theatrical figure: a bearded king in crown and patterned robes, raising a foaming stein as though proposing a ceremonial toast. Rich crimson, deep green and gleaming gold crowd the vertical composition, while a horned goat, curling foliage and an inset view of a brewery turn the advertisement into an elaborate pageant of beer, tradition and abundance.

The poster belongs to the increasingly sophisticated world of late nineteenth-century American beverage advertising, when breweries used bold commercial imagery to distinguish their products in a competitive market. Bock beer offered especially fertile ground for visual invention. Traditionally associated with seasonal brewing, it was frequently represented by a goat because the German word Bock also means a billy goat. Deutz makes that familiar emblem part of a broader fantasy of ceremony and prestige, presenting the drink not as an everyday refreshment but as an occasion in itself.

A closer look

The king dominates the centre of the design. His long hair and beard frame a face turned towards the raised stein, while the crown and ornate cloak establish an exaggerated courtly splendour. Highlights catch the beer, the vessel and the gold details of his costume, sharpening them against the intense red of the robe. The treatment is polished and figurative, but deliberately larger than life: product endorsement becomes royal proclamation.

To the left, the goat introduces a more playful note. Its curved horns and finely described coat stand out amid vigorous green vines and decorative flourishes, creating a lively contrast with the king’s formal bearing. These overlapping forms give the poster a dense, layered quality; there is very little inactive space, yet the principal motifs remain clearly ordered around the central figure. Red and green provide the strongest opposition, linked by warm browns, pale blue passages and repeated flashes of gold.

Typography anchors this profusion of imagery. “D.G. Yuengling Jr. Brewing Co.” appears prominently across the upper section, while the words “Bock Beer” form a substantial decorative statement below. Rather than sitting apart from the illustration, the lettering participates in its ornamental rhythm. At the lower right, a comparatively subdued view of brewery buildings introduces an industrial counterpoint to the fantasy above, connecting the regal toast and heraldic decoration to a recognisable place of production. A monogram-like emblem and faint border further reinforce the poster’s carefully constructed graphic hierarchy.

Context and significance

Commercial posters of this period often borrowed the visual languages of portraiture, heraldry and historical costume to suggest longevity and distinction. Here, Deutz combines those associations with immediate advertising clarity: the stein identifies the pleasure being offered, the goat signals bock beer, and the brewery view grounds the brand in manufacture. The composition could be read quickly from a distance, but its patterned clothing, animal detail, architectural vignette and ornamental lettering rewarded closer attention.

What makes the design particularly engaging is the balance between grandeur and humour. The crowned drinker lends the beer mock-ceremonial authority, while the watchful goat keeps the scene firmly within the exuberant world of seasonal brewing imagery. It is both an advertisement and a compact example of how late nineteenth-century graphic art could turn a single beverage into an entire visual spectacle.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
