conrad-stein-s-vintage-lager-beer-poster-by-moritz-ulffers-1877
Conrad Stein’s Vintage Lager Beer Poster by Moritz Ulffers, 1877

Moritz Ulffers’s Conrad Stein’s Lager Bier, created in 1877, turns a beer advertisement into a miniature pageant. At its centre, a richly dressed, king-like figure raises a glass with ceremonial assurance, his red and gold costume blazing against the surrounding ornament. A second figure approaches with a tray, while brewing vessels, architectural vignettes and luxuriant borders gather around them. The result is at once theatrical and commercially direct: an elaborate scene organised around the emphatic promise of “LAGER BIER”.

The poster belongs to a period when printed advertising was becoming an increasingly prominent part of nineteenth-century visual culture. Manufacturers could present their goods not merely through names and prices, but through memorable characters, decorative typography and carefully constructed associations. Ulffers combines these elements with particular exuberance. Beer is given the visual language of royal ceremony and convivial abundance, while the brand name remains clear enough to register immediately. Decoration and information are not competing forces here; each reinforces the other.

A closer look

The composition is strongly centred and broadly symmetrical. The regal drinker occupies the foreground, holding his glass high so that the gesture becomes the poster’s visual climax. His clothing is built from intense crimson, orange and golden yellow, with intricate patterning enlivening the sleeves and body of the costume. Beside him, the elaborately dressed serving figure introduces a gentler diagonal through the extended tray. Fine details in the face, garments and tray reward close attention without weakening the boldness of the overall design.

Behind the figures, a barrel and a large pot connect the ceremonial fantasy to the material world of brewing. Green foliage punctuates the predominantly warm palette, cooling the reds and golds while also binding the central scene to the ornamental margins. Vines, floral motifs and scrolling forms run along the edges like a decorative proscenium, framing the figures as though they were performers on a stage.

At the top, an eagle bearing a banner adds a heraldic flourish. Below the main scene, two circular architectural vignettes introduce buildings in finely compressed detail, their windows and façades contrasting with the larger, more animated figures above. The inscription “NEW YORK” anchors these elements geographically. Most forceful of all is the lower-centre lettering: “LAGER BIER” appears in broad red capitals against a pale ground, creating a clear typographic landing point beneath the visual bustle.

Context and significance

Commercial imagery of this period often borrowed from forms already associated with authority, festivity and prestige: heraldry, portraiture, ornamental borders and allegorical figures. In Ulffers’s design, these conventions transform a beverage into the centre of an imagined courtly celebration. The elevated glass functions as both toast and display, while the attendant, barrel and vessels create a concise narrative of service, production and enjoyment.

What makes Conrad Stein’s Lager Bier especially engaging is its balance of density and clarity. Nearly every area contains incident—patterned clothing, foliage, scrollwork, architecture or lettering—yet the hierarchy remains unmistakable. The eye moves from raised glass to figures, from figures to brand, and finally into the smaller peripheral details. It is an accomplished example of nineteenth-century advertising as visual entertainment: colourful, ornate and engineered to be remembered.

Choosing the right size and finish

Artwork can feel intimate at smaller sizes and dramatically more architectural at larger ones.
