One open flower dominates the upright composition, its densely layered petals turning from creamy white to the faintest blush of pink. Around it, serrated leaves, a partially opened bloom and tightly held buds trace the plant through several stages of growth, while the pale, largely empty ground keeps every stem and contour clearly legible.
Redouté was among the most accomplished botanical artists of early nineteenth-century Europe, admired for reconciling scientific observation with an unusually graceful sense of design. His flower studies appeared at a time when botanical publishing, horticultural collecting and public enthusiasm for natural history were closely intertwined. The publication dates of this study place it within the years of his celebrated work on roses, a subject particularly suited to his ability to distinguish minute structural detail without sacrificing the character of the whole plant.
A closer look
The principal rose opens near the centre of the sheet, but the arrangement avoids rigid symmetry. Its outer petals spread broadly and irregularly, framing a more intricate centre in which the folded forms gather into soft shadow. Fine tonal transitions give the pale bloom volume: cooler whites meet warmer cream, with restrained touches of muted pink appearing along selected folds rather than covering the flower uniformly. Delicate stippling around the base further softens the passage from petals to supporting stem.
The surrounding foliage provides the composition’s stronger colour and sharper rhythm. In the lower left, overlapping leaves fan out from the stem, their pointed tips and toothed margins crisply defined. Veins branch across surfaces modelled in several greens, from light sage to deeper, earthy tones. Redouté varies these leaves rather than repeating a decorative formula: some face forward and reveal their full structure, while others tilt or overlap, creating modest depth within the otherwise deliberately clear botanical presentation.
Above the open rose, the smaller forms record the plant in transition. A green bud at the upper left remains tightly enclosed; to the upper right, another bloom has begun to loosen, exposing pink-tinged petals. These stages create a gentle visual ascent from leaf to bud to flower. The inscription at the lower right identifies the subject as a Bengal rose with white flowers, connecting the elegant arrangement to the classificatory purpose of botanical illustration.

Redouté’s reputation rested on precisely this union of accuracy and refinement. Working within the distinguished tradition of European florilegia and botanical books, he presented plants as specimens worthy of close study, yet arranged them with the poise expected of independent works of art. Rather than placing the rose in a garden setting, he isolates the branch against open space. The absence of landscape, vase or decorative border removes narrative distraction and makes variations in petal, leaf and bud the subject of sustained attention.

Personalised and customised pieces usually take an extra 1–2 working days, because we prepare your design and send it to you for approval before printing.
Very large framed orders can take a little longer, as they need extra care in production and delivery.
Every order is carefully packaged: unframed prints are sent in a strong protective tube, while framed pieces are securely packed with protective materials around the frame.

Our standard frame is a gallery-style black ash hardwood frame, with a simple, modern look. It is approximately 20mm (0.8in) wide. You can also view some lovely customer photos of framed maps and art.
We use super-clear acrylic glazing, also known as Perspex or Acrylite, instead of traditional glass. It is lighter, safer, and has lower reflectivity, giving the artwork a clearer, cleaner appearance.
Six standard frame colours are available at no extra cost: black, dark brown, dark grey, oak, white, and antique gold. Custom framing and mounting/matting is also available for customers looking for something more specific.
Most maps, art prints, and illustrations are also available as a framed canvas. We use matte cotton canvas, stretch it over a sustainably sourced wooden box frame, and then float the piece within a wooden outer frame. The finished result is beautifully presented, with no glazing between you and the artwork.
All frames are supplied ready to hang, with either string or brackets fitted to the back. Very large frames will include heavy-duty hanging plates and/or a mounting baton. If you have any questions, please get in touch.
